Balancing wheels: Painted vs. Powder Coated

Just curious....

Anyone have experience in balancing both non-factory painted and powder coated wheel?

I was wondering if there was any slight but noticable out of balance as sometimes with painted wheels. I know painting can be off enough to make the wheel a little heavy on a side, not much but still easily balanced.

I am not interested in a debate of painted vs powdercoated. I paint all of my wheels especially since I have about 12-14 wheel and I would go broke powdercoating them all.

It shouldn't make any noticable difference at all by powder coating and painting. So long as your not just layering paint on paint etc. . . that would just increase the weight of the wheel. It shouldn't be a problem.

Not all true. Even if you do not layer on paint, you cannot spray it perfectly even. There will be a heavy side. Any experienced balancer will tell you that. It may only be a small amount but may require 1/2 to 1 more weight. I have balanced factory painted and non-factory painted wheels before but not powdercoated.

I anodize my wheels.  After doing this, there's no other way. I can get a set of wheels done for $200 if anyone's itnerested...I just need to buy another kit.

Also, when I painted wheels I put them on an axle and painted them spinning.  Made for perfect, natural balance.

dgyver...you really made me have to think on this one....

here is my thought, in both cases user error can cause the wheels to be unbalanced, since powder coat is electrosprayed you can still over coat a particular place one the wheel before it bakes, just like you can with a normal laquer/achrylic(sp?)/expoxy

I really dont think powder coat is that much thicker than standard paint so to be honest with you I dont that there would ever be over a 1/3oz difference.

Oh yea ... powdercoated sheite is heavy. You can actually pick up the thing and know its gained a ton of weight. so presumable ... it can get un balanced.
