how thin are you building your carbon?...... I've got a 12-ply (which isn't thick at all) that we've beat the shaZam! out of and its not cracked one bit.

And just for a reference, my degree is partially based on composite manufacturing, so I'm pretty sure I'm going to have you beat on this one.

It may not have the impact resistance of metal, but its not "one hit and its toast"....  then again, its not going to deform which is a desirable quality of composites, unlike metals.

Perfect example of that... is your helmet SNELL rated.  SNELL tests helmets to withstand repeated impacts in the same area.  Your helmet isn't made of metal is it? no, its a composite.

I'm pulling out my com-man text book tomorrow.....

uhm,.... i say go aluminum, or Ti, but if you are looking to go Carbon, go with Trek.... I can't say enough good things about Trek road bikes.  I absolutely hate their mountain bike line up (I'm a Specialized kinda guy) but their road bikes are to die for.  5500OCLV... heaven.... any year.

The cans are roughly 3/32" thick.  For this project the material is 4-ply.  Not really a high-stress part so thick layering isn't needed.  As thin as it is it's got some decent give to it so yeah...it's not really "one hit and it's toast"...at least not right away.  Like I said, a good ping with a ball pin hammer on stainless and all you'll get is a litle dent, where as it'll cause tremendous damage to the surface of a composite...and composites like to do that whole windshied thing where one tiny crack gets bigger and bigger over time.

I'm trying to find a place where I can get carbon fiber "ribbon"...it's be great if I could get about 25ft of cf ribbon 2" wide.  Solve my surface problems without vac-bagging too...

I used to get my cloth and other supplies from US Composites, Aircraft Spruce and Wicks. Cloth was getting difficult to purchase, probably because of the war. I stopped making parts partially because of this.
Common sense in not very common.

Ok thread jack.... Trek? All there carbons, the oclv have a wood like ride, they seem dead. Check out the high end giants, you'd be supprised and may save some cash. Also go find a cervelo if you have deep pockets, them thar is purdy! Glad to know you ride.
Sorry dude, you can have your thread back. I like the tl, that looks good! I'd love to know how to make some carbon stuff, I've got ideas for a flysceen and a lower cowl, any eduction sources, ie books or links?
If it comes out of your body you shouldn't be afraid to hold it in your hand! :o
