Rear Wheel swap...

I've done the searches and found what rear wheels can be swapped out onto the GS...what I need to know is what the difference is between the 1998-2002 Suzuki Katana GSX600F and GSX750F rear wheel and a 96 GSX600F rear wheel is?

Can it work on our bikes? I noticed one on Ebay today and my friend has a 96 wheel set that I can have if it will work...

The GS drive cushion has 5 slots.  I can't tell if this one has 6 or 12, but either way, it's wrong.  There may be other problems, since you could probably use the katana sprocket hub, but I don't know where that path leads...  Like you could get chain alignment problems or something.  Probably someone else should have answered this instead...

So I can think of one problem... the Katana sprocket I think is 47-tooth, and on the GS you'd want something closer to 39.  So that means finding a 39-ish sprocket that fits on the katana hub.  Which may be possible, I don't know.  I'm just thinking out loud.  Maybe you'd even like the gearing at 47... you'd need a longer chain, though.  Well, except the katana sprocket is a 530... you could probably find a 520 sprocket for it, but it's starting to sound like a pain in the ass.

Regarding the first link, I didn't think the 96 Katana had the twisted spoke design.  That looks like a GS wheel!

As for the second link... ouch on the price.  I just got my Katana wheel for $63 shipped.

(Edit: It was also my Christmas gift to myself.  My wife's Christmas gift to me was permitting me to pre-buy three track days for next year.  )

Yes, the pre-98 Katana's had the exact same wheel as the GS, including the wheel bearings, hence the first wheel posted looks just like a GS wheel.

The other two (the 98-02 wheels) will work just fine on your bike, but will require modifications to your bike as stated in the FAQ section.  The Katana 750 and 600 have the same rear wheel and bearings as far as I know.

Yes, your friends 96 Kat 600 rear wheel will work just fine on your GS, it is (litterally) the same casting and wheel bearings as the GS.

complete wheel assy with a brand new tar and the axle and caliper bracket

it sounded pricey at first.....then i did some figuring
it is a 10-15 min swap when it shows up

I did a rear wheel swap yesterday.  Man, what a headache. 
I spent
Rim $140
rotor $20
tire, $100
tire mount $10
nut's and bolts $10
Butane torch $20


Went with a 150 BT-45 rear tire.  Looks good.  The bike appears more ballanced.  Spent many hour from start to finish.  Torque arm was the thing that got me down.  I couldn't get the holes to line up right.  I got alittle carried away beating it into shape.  Ended up using a smaller bolt for the time being.  I did it all on the cheap, but I'm still happy with the results.  Balanced the wheel myself, stripped and painted the rim myself, didn't mess with the bearings, they were good enough.

89-97 Kat 600/750 3.0" front and 3.5" rear wheels are the same as the GS.
98-02 Kat 600/750 rear wheel is 4.5" and is the same as the 99-02 SV650/S

The bearings may be different, I do not recall. You can look it up on any online parts diagram.

alright, it looks like the bearing are the same, so does this mean we would be good to go for a direct swap minus the mods listed above?

any tips for replaceing the bearings? i just got a set of Pirelli Diablo to install, the rear in mounted and balanced but i got to wait till my brake rotor get here, then i install it

i am runing 190/60-17 rear and 120/60-17 fornt

will a katana front wheel bolt ON so that i can get the same spoke or is a 120-60-17 ok on the gs wheel?

The 98+ Kat front is not bolt on.
IIRC a 120 will not fit between the forks plus it is too wide for a 3" wheel.

Good luck fitting a 190 with chain clearance.

woops my bad its a 160/60-17 rear

i did another quick search there are a few folk that have run 120 on the front and no problems, (other than fast turn in/sqwermish) but i hope the 60 profile will widen it out a little we shall see

just held it up to the front and slid it in... its very close, i may have to mod the front finder i will know in a week
