what exactly does an ignition advancer do and how does it help performance?

In technical terms advancing the static timing a few degrees it causes the ignition process to start slightly sooner and allows the motor to take better advantage of the available octane and energy in the fuel.

In practical terms the helps low RPM torque. Making this modification may require the use of Premium fuel if you aren't running it already.
