I was not hoping for this but my gs500 2001 for 700 dollars is now not starting. I rode home from work yesterday and it seemed a bit slow, along with it was really cold outside and I had tokeep the choke on the whole time. I go to start it now and it almost sounds like it will start but it doesnt. It has gas yet its acting like its out of gas. I have pushed it up a hill and popped it into gear but what should i do next for diagnosis and or possibly fix it

go down to the local gas station and fill up a certified container with some gas and top off your tank, just to be on the safest side possible.

Also, check your battery.  I know that my 06 won't want to start when its very cold outside, and its a pain in the ass to bump start it.  Its been suggested to me to check the fluid level in my battery (although its fine in my case).  You may want to do that.

Also, when was the last time your carbs were cleaned?

Check the wiki file for details on getting to the carbs and cleaning them and all that hooey.

but you'll need to at least pull your gas tank off, remove the airbox and assorted hoses, as well as remove some vaccumm lines from the carbs (I suggest taking pictures with a digital camera so you know exactly how to route them and where they go because an ounce of preperation removes a ton of work).

Its also an excellent time to do the "Allen Bolt" swap (its pretty much required and you'll know all about it the second you read the wiki) and also maybe a rejet (even a #20 pilot jet).  The bike does come a little lean from the factory and rejetting gives the bike enough fuel in the cylinders to really let the engine perform like it wants to.

And carbs wouldn't prevent the bike from "turning over"... they would be a factor in the bike not starting.

The motorcycle is no longer the hobby, the skill has become the hobby.

Power does not compare to skill.  What good is power without the skill to use it?
