About three weeks ago I noticed a clanking noise coming from the engine.  It seems to only do it when its in idle.  It sounds like something is knocking around in there.. Maybe a bearing???  When I ride the noise stops, but when I get back down do idle she starts knocking.  Anyone have this same problem of have dealt with this before??  Let me know.. Thanks, Ryan

Cam chain tensioner?  (CCT).  If the cam chain gets loose, it can make a noise in the engine.

Loose valve clearances?

Yeah, i was thinking it was one of the two... I am going to have someone look at it soon.. I am pretty handy, but I think this one is out of my league.  Thanks for the suggestions...

Ah, the mysterious noise arises again!!!!!!!!!!!   :x  :x

Only when it's hot and only when at idle?  Pick up the revs and it stops?  It's in the top of the engine and is more of a clunk than a click?

Many have had this noise here on the gstwins forum on new as well as old bikes.  We seem to disagree on what it is, but all have agreed it is harmless.  I first heard it when the bike was nearly new and have just passed 76,000 miles without anything breaking yet.

I had it during the first 5k miles when I was running 10W-40 dino juice.  Went away when I changed to 15W-50 Mobil 1 untill past 60k miles when it came back.  Went away again most of the time when I changed to 15W-40 dino truck oil.  Just comes back before oil changes when the oil has thinned out.

OK, for the last time ever!!!!!  It's one of camshafts shifting back and forth sideways.  I have checked and one of my camshafts has some sideplay while the other doesn't.  Nobody else here agrees, includind Shrinath, but that's what it is.  Doesn't matter though if it's harmless.

It is NOTa tappet or the camchain.  My opinion and your entiteled to yours.

Well thanks for the advice!  I appreciate all the help on this issue.  I agree with you and think that it is a cam shaft with a little play in it.  I am going to give the old GS an Oil Change to a thicker oil.  Maybe that will help the clanking for a while.   Thanks, Ryan
