Hi all.

I live in Florida, but just got a job in California (Merced area). I know the emissions standards are more strict there, but that's about all I know. Does anyone have an idea about how I would go about making my bike ready to register in California, and what it might cost? Is it worth it, or should I just sell it and buy something over there. I have a '97 with a V&H system and lunch box.  Thanks!

<!-- Edit -->

I just found a DMV website that seemed to suggest that bikes don't need to comply with the emissions inspections, so I should be able to register it as-is. If this is the case, I'm stoked. Let me know if I'm not interpreting this correctly, though.

You're right, you don't need to do smog checks for motorcycles in California.  When I purchased my 2nd hand GS500, DMV also didn't ask me to provide anything related to smog checks.

BTW, here's a page from California DMV stating that smog checks are not necessary for motorcycles:

Although that Jesse James guy just got fined like $200k or some such for building all those bikes without some sort of anti-emission or -pollutant equipment. What a rebel.

I wonder if the check for the fine was had 'Discovery Channel' as the signed ?

You do know, 200k is like nothing for those folks with nationally televised shows, right ?

Funny how folks that make some of the worst handling, unsafe, unenvironmentally correct, stupid looking and obnoxiousely loud bikes get coverage.

guess a show about a few hundred asian engineers doing trig to squeeze another 2 bhp from a can while remaining california compliant wouldn't be sexy ;)

Merced ... what ... hell hole was taken ???
What ... there are jobs in merced ???
What ... You working for UC merced ???
Its the only freaking job in merced that is worth moving across the country for ... heck worth getting out of bed for ...
Pity ... cow herding doesn't pay like it used to ... so those people are flipping real estate ...
Anyway ... 2 time loser I mean resident of merced ...
Be careful, dont step in the merced ... and whatever you do, dont rent, buy or even go near a realtor/property manager called Shewey.
Oh Yea, your bike needs to emit gas comparable to the average heffer ... else it will have to have some extra cow pie's till it will ...
Cool.

I admit Merced isn't my ideal town. I much prefer the Pacific Northwest. But, we'll only be there a little under a year. I'll be flight instructing there. At least we'll be close to Yosemite.

Aaaah ... The arctic tundra. I love that too. That white powder that comes in winter ... you put some on a mirror and cut it with a razor blade and snort it, and you'll feel like Kate Moss.  O0 ...
Now Flight school ??? you mean crop dusting ...
Yose Might ... I heard Donald Trump is building some very nice multi storied buildings there. you know, retail, then office space and condos over those. Nice 60-80 storied buildings.
That chick that won the third apprentice show is working it over there. Apparently 1.6 million and up condos are 90% sold out. You may want to jump on it as soon as you get there.
You do know that UC merced is there and its transformed it into the next NYC dont you, so yea hurry up and buy condos before you're priced out forever.
Merced real estate always appreciates you know.
Anyway ... done with the sarcasm ... but seriously, dont buy a horse from a clown named Shewey.
I lived in an apartment called Bear Creek apartments. I liked that place but that was in 01. I also lived right by the airport in a run down shack ... no reason you'd want that though. It was a POS and prolly used to be a cow shed.
Cool.

How many miles on the clock of the bike, if less than 6500 depending on it's year it will have to have a California emissions package to get it registered there. If over 6500 miles then as a 49 states model you would not have to install all the CARB crap.
Why didn't you just go the whole way and buy me a f@#king Kawasaki you bastards.

It's just about to turn over 15k, so I guess I'm safe there.
