Ab out to rejet 2000 gs500..

Hello my friends. I am about to rejet because I am hoping this will fix my backfiring and my bike cutting off when I am sitting still.

I bought my bike from someone that already purchased 4 jets. 2 larger ones (it says R box (symbol that is) and 125 below that on both larger ones) and then 2 smaller ones say box (symbol) 37.5 on them.

Do I need to do any cleaning on them before I install? They look pretty clean... I already have the K&N AirFilter on, so I am thinking all I need to do is replace the jets.

I believe I see the guy replacing 2 larger ones, but that is it. Or am I suppose to change the smaller ones as well?

Oh yeah.. forgot my main question :)

will my 125 and 37.5 jets be much of an upgrade from stock? I don't really care about upgrades from stock.. I just want to stop backfiring and the bike from cutting off (I see the guy's tutorial he is using: 127.5 mains and 40 pilots ).

Also, should I be worried that my 37.5 size jets are not bright gold color? maybe I should clean them somehow (maybe they are not new?)

I don't remember what one the previous owner installed.. it was just the filter that is a drop in install.. just take out old, put in new one (cheapest one I believe)

You don't need to clean them (unless they're used, which would give them a dark, dull color).

40 pilots are suggested; non-bleeder type.  125 or 127.5 mains are acceptable.

37.5 is the stock size for pilot jets.  The size 40 pilots are what will really get rid of the stalling/stumbling at low rpm.

Backfiring is usually from too much gas, so you may have something else that's wrong, like:
Float level too high (probably not)
float needle seat o-ring deteriorated (the seat that the float needle sits in, there's an o-ring behind it)
Float needle is bad (run fingernail gently down rubber tip, if it hangs up, you need a new needle; although you should be able to see the notch all around the middle of the rubber tip)

What is your idle at after a 15 minute ride?

Yeah, that is the problem.. I can drive all over town, but if I don't first rev my bike to red line for a minute or two before leaving, I have to have the choke out the whole time I ride.. or it will cut off when I am sitting still.

My least problem is the backfire.. maybe once or twice a day.


--edit--hmm.. I took out hte spark plugs and they were black on the end! Guess it is time to clean out the carb and set it up right... As well as change the oil.
