I wanted to get a pod for my bike. I called the local bike shop to ask about rejetting. He said I should not use a pod, that poeple have problems with them and it's not worth it.
but then I figured he is not a gs rider so he doesn't feel our pain.

should do this upgrade and if so what jets should I use?

Is it better to use a K&N dropin replacement and which jets do I need?

Thanks a lot

Can't comment on if pods are better than drop-in or vice-versa yet as I still have stock in, but the GS wiki site has a good chart of sizes for different set-ups.

enjoy!

Keep in mind that going for a high-flow filter without also changing your exhaust is kind of a fool's errand.  The few people that have done this kind of mod aren't terribly happy with it, as I recall.

I was more than pleased when I did it to my F model. :)

If you go the pod without re-jetting your bike WILL run horribly.

I did a test run with just adding a pod to my stock bike and it WOULD NOT rev past 6000rpm as the fuel to air ratio leaned out excessively.

That is the only reason to avoid the POD filter. If you re-jet it properly you'll absolutely love it (new exhaust or not).

and if you think about it, if adding a POD maxes the bike out at 6000rpm because it flows so much better than the stock airbox.... one you jet your jetting right you an understand why there will be an improvement in top end performance.

Hmm.  Guess I was remembering wrong.  Or was it the other way around, people didn't like changing their exhaust without going to a high flow air filter?  Either way, I recommend doing both.  :icon_mrgreen:

Problems with a pod filter?  I would not own a GS without one. Jet correctly and the bike runs great.
Common sense in not very common.

I don't think there is much of a performance difference really between the lunchbox/pod/K&N drop in/Uni drop in but you need to rejet. I have a Uni drop in and I'm happy with it, but I'm kind of thinking about getting the lunchbox just so that it's easy to get to the carbs.

I hate airboxes, they just get in the way

In the past, as was well documented on this site, people were having trouble getting their bikes exactly tuned back to stock AF ratios, and were disappointed in their change.  Once they added a pipe, it was easier to get honed in on correct jet sizes.

It's been a couple years now, but I stuck with the standard Srinath rejetting setup and stock filter/box with drilled out exhaust.  I'm much happier now with my bike that it has Pods and full exhaust.  It actually revs out to redline now, pulling harder and harder till I shut it off or shift.

i can't wait to get mine in.  just waiting for Srinath to let me know which exhaust to buy!!!!  it's either a TL1000 or a Wileyco.  I'm leaning toward the TL1000 for the price and the sound...

Don't know if I'd put it quite that way. The "stock" A/F ratio was the main problem, it was terrible. I'd recommend a rejet even if *nothing* else was changed.

That's true, what I meant and should have said was: getting it back to where it would run like a re-jetted, but otherwise stock bike.  I re-jetting mine immediately after buying it way back in '01, according to what this site and Srinath in particular had said worked the best, so it had run fine for me ever since then.
