"Just try not to screw it up!"

robbie

He is talking about opening the canister and removing the packing, it can be done on some bikes.
I have no idea or experience with the GS.

salad

would completely removing the canister cause any problems? mine wasnt even connected to anything when i bought my bike.

werase643

CA bikes are jetted leaner i think
the charcoal canister....is part of the tank venting system ...again I think
don't you have yearly inspections

old friend used to have to pull the 500+ C.I. big block out of his el camino and install a 305 with a 2 BBL carb once a year to pass inspection....next day the big engine went back in.

sp this is what i was reading now these are bits of the post the rest talk about an ingition advancer
PKASSO SAID
have a CA bike and I just ordered the V&H ignition advance.
What will that do to the timeing?
I removed my charcoal canister and just let the extra hose from the tank dangle down behind the batery and drain if need be. I also read that the two conections to the carborator can just remain open or connect a short piece of hose to it

SRINATH SAID
Well the advancer (if you get it...V&H had been back ordered forever) will move the ignition from 5 degrees to 17 degrees. Now that seems like a lot but bear in mind the standard US bike has 12 and not 5 degrees. So It will work just fine. That advance is just to get the combustion right/better till ~3K or so. At 3K the bike will advance electronically to over 17 degrees in both US and CA bikes so no problem there.
Hoses dangling is fine too. I typically cut the hoses tight at the can so the gas spills are away from the motor in case
and PANTABLO SAID
I'm looking to one day remove the emissions stuff-just so the bike looks lighter and so you can see through the frame

so what i would like to do i remove the canister so my bike looks less cluttered so is removing the smog crap going to affect my bikes performance im guessing srinath can be of much help since he was around during the time the post was born.

CA does not (currently) require a yearly smog inspection for motorcycles.
The motorcycle is no longer the hobby, the skill has become the hobby.

Bumping this up - I removed all of the emissions equipment (charcoal canister, bracket, frame mounted valve, etc).  I shouldnt see any problems, correct?  I plan to just let the tank drain down with teh rest of the drain lines.

The bike is also being rejetted correctly.

The lines foe the charcoal canister run to the carbs. The fuel tank is vented thru the tank fuel cap.I have a thread about this in the FAQ,titled,"
How to Clean and Grease Gas Cap and Vent-Sticky Me Please ".The only hose connected to the tank that doesn't run to the carbs is the recessed gas cap drain. You'll loose about 10 pounds when you drop the emissions crap.

Nope sorry Ben - as Mach1 pointed out above and I just reverifyed Cali bikes have 4 lines - 2 from fuel petcock, 1 fuel cap vent and 1 other that flows to the charcoal canister.

I have yet to see a vent hose to the cap on any bike. The hose that plugs into the bottom of the tank drains the cap area. The drain is under the cap rim.Never seen any emissions equipment connected to the tank.  :dunno_white:

???? Thanks for the pic.None of the parts fiches I looked at had that tank listed.I was also told that CA tanks were the same.Bad info on my part. Thanks for showing me that.

So plug the canister vent with a vacuum cap and you're golden.

What I did was remove all the Emissions crap and plug the Vac line going to the carb. I dont have any hoses under my tank anymore the shop I took it to to fix my carbs forgot to reinstall them but its fine for me Ill fix that later. but you will see a Vac line going from the carbs to the canister, leave it on tha carbs and relocate it to the right fottpeg area and plug it with a cap and you'll be fine. just dont tell the treehuggers :thumb:
