breather line belching fuel...

My breather line is expelling fuel at an alarming rate whilst the engine is running... The motor runs great just the breather is belching fuel out... any suggestions... also this is happening with the airbox off...

Mine started doing that  I just ripped the carbs off and cleaned em real good........make sure to check that your floats are still good.....  solved the problem for me  :dunno_white:   or you could just rig up the breather hose as a flame thrower and really scare the cars behind you  :icon_mrgreen:

I just cleaned the carbs out... I think the floats are set properly... The bike runs great besides this...

... ok I'll check all the jets and floats tomorrow... What gets me is that the bike seems to be running fine besides that... It has power all the way through the throttle and starts up no problem....I figured I might have hooked something up wrong...

For clarification the gas is coming out of the breather on the top of the cylinder head not the breather on the carbs... Also the gas coming out is severely discolored...dark brown... :dunno_white:

I really hope you're joking. If not, that isn't gas, it's oil. If you don't have an airbox, you must put a little filter on the breather, otherwise your engine will get all sorts of dirt in there. If you put the filter on a hose and route it up, that helps the oil drain back to the engine. This shouldn't happen though, and you have some serious blowby issues.

I'm not joking... I do have an airbox but I was just testing the carbs before I put the whole assembly back together... anyone know what could be causing that... also the stuff coming out has gas in it... It isn't as viscous as oil but I think it could be mixed with oil...

wait a minuite... I may have a diagnosis............before I pulled off the carbs I accidentally left the bike on prime... it leaked all its gas... the gas seems very thin when I looked at the dipstick last... I think the gas could've leaked into the oil thinning it out and raising the oil level to an ungodly level... then when I turn on the bike my gas/oil mixture spews from the crankcase blowback... so... what type of oil should I put in my gs...

 :o :o :o  Ummm........there's gas coming out of your engine breather?????  That makes my head hurt.  Unless you left it on prime on another planet with higher gravity  I don't see it flooding that bad.  What does come to mind is something like a blown piston ring that would allow gas into the oil.  Otherwise some one must really hate you and have decided that pouring gas in your oil would be  a good vengeance........  In which case    :2guns: :2guns:  As far as oil  Get something cheap , your going to want to drop in fresh oil, then run it for a couple hundred miles tops then change it again and inspect the oil if it still has large amounts of gas in it I'd say hello to Mr. engine rebuild,  that is assuming the engine still runs,  if there's no gas in it then it was an interesting little freak accident that will hopefully never happen again.........

Drain the oil/gas and refill with fresh oil.

hopefully no damage has been done.  One of my GS's used to do this constantly.  Like wrecent said, my only recourse was to lift the tank and cut off the petcock.

That same GS leaks oil from the head gasket. Prolly cause I didn't tend to it in time. :dunno_white:

Change your oil and rebuild/clean your carbs.
Not the brightest crayon in the box, but I can still be seen from a distance.  ;P

So many things could be wrong with the engine but none of them are going to be cheap to fix.

Change the oil with something cheap, 20w50 would probally be best as the remaining gas should thin out your oil a bit. Don't bother changing your filter right avay either. If you didn't run the bike for too long, you'll probally be okay.

The remaining gas in your oil should evaporate after a good long ride (after you change it) and you'll be okay. I'd recomend changing the oil again though, after a couple good rides, this time change the filter too. The gas will have acted like an oil flush, and if your bike is still running okay the engine will actually be really clean.

Thanks for all of your help guys... I am changing the oil tomorrow and I'll see if I've caused any real damage... It hasn't run for more than a minuite in its current state so I'm hoping for the best! I'll let you all know how it went as soon as I change the oil! thanks again :thumb:

Okay it took me a while to change the oil but I did it and sure enough it started up and I rode it to work today! thanks for all of your help!

Good news, sounds like you were lucky.

"Don't forget that at least one of your needle valves is still leaking and needs to be fixed, and DON'T leave it on "Prime"."
