The rear is a 140/70-17M/C  66H and yeah it's a BT45r.  What exactly is the danger in having a bias ply rear with a radial front????

heatherg11

I have a macadam (sp?) on the front, but that's going to have to be replaced soon also, will try to get a Bt-45 for the front also.  Just wanted to make sure the Bt-45 is a good tire.  thanks for all the opinions.

It's a stability issue and pertains to all vehicles and not just motorcycles.  Back in the 60's and 70's when cars were changing over to radials we were told the same thing, always put the radials on the rear and you will find the same warning now from the auto tire mfgs like this quote from Goodyear: "When radial tires are used with bias or bias belted tires on the same car, the radials must always be placed on the rear axle."

I've mixed a lot of different types and brands of motorcycle tires  but wouldn't run a radial front with a bias rear.  I've seen people do it without a problem who were commuter type users but for spirited riding or high speed riding I wouldn't try it.  Possibility of serious stability and/or handling issues.

OK I'm heading to the bike shop tommorow to see if he has a radial that'll fit my rear wheel.  I definitely ride  pretty spirited :icon_rolleyes:   I found some articles about the differences on the net.  It looks like the biggest danger is in hard cornering there the radial remains stiff and the bias ply doesn't potentially causing serious traction issues and serious road rash :o :o
