i biked out to my cousin's wedding this weekend and was planning on doing an oil change once i got back from it.  it had been around 2k miles since i last did it, so it had to be done.  unfortunately, because i neglected to look at my oil before the trip then when i was around 10 miles from home i heard this weird blacking noise coming from the engine at around 5k+ rpm's.  i disengaged the clutch and yes, my oil light came on.  i pulled over right away, but i don';t know how far i'd been riding like that, maybe 3 miles?  anyway, i just put some new oil in it, and it's still making that noise.  did i seriously hurt something?  below 5k rpm's it sounds normal, but up there now it just has that noise accomnying the normal "roar" the gs makes.  any help?

Hhhhmmm, doesn`t sound too good. Especially becaus it starts above 5000rpm. It could be one of the valves. When the oil light of a GS goes on, there is almost no oil in the engine, so it sounds pretty bad. Check with a local dealer, maybe he knows (or other here on the board). All the best!

well i road it to work today (cause i don't have a car), and it sounded ok at first.  it has a pretty normal sound up to 4k, then from 4k-5k there is a grumbling sound, then about 5k it sounds fine again.  any ideas?  sigh

Well If the thing runs you prolly didn't kill anything. valve adjustment and wear and end play check may give you a confirmation. In case of oil starvation that is where the first sign of damage is usually. How many quarts low was it. I personally have run mine on just about a quart and it still didn't damage it, 20K miles later its fine making 155 and 160 compression. But I guess I didn't ride mine too long like that cos the oil loss was a sudden bursting pressure guage. 2 quarts went in a matter of seconds and I hit the kill when my right side was covered in oil.
Cool.

alright, new news.  after riding my bike again tonight, i find the sound isn't made while i'm in nuetral, or more exactly, when i don't have a gear ingaged.  it's only while i'm actually riding that it makes the previously described noise at those rpms.  i'd imagine this means i've damaged my gear box, might i be correct?

Does it do it in all the gears? Also this may sound stupid, but how is you gas tank. Do you have all the correct spacers and what not holding up the tank? Mine has been messed with and now rattles and makes all sorts or noises at about 5k rpms, just a guess.
