Interesting thing happened this morning on the way to work.

I don't need or HAVE a choke anymore it seems.

When I move the lever rearward (choke on) the cable moves, and the slide moves properly. But there is no juicy choke action at all. The bike starts on COLD mornings (50F) after sitting all night with just a little throttle.

Of course I have to keep the throttle cracked for it to continue to run.

Weird, what does this mean ?

ya, I guess that wonderfull shop richened everything to the point of not needing choke anymore.

i really need to find a cage so  i can leave the bike in a friends garage whilst doing all the carb re-adjusting. damned cages. damned stealerships. damned scratched up rear wheel thanks to stupid stealership.

aha! blacky marker fixy scratched up wheel.

damn the stealership once again for good measure.

Check out the sleeve that the choke fits into at the carbs, you may be running the choke all the time without noticing it.
GS500E with a bunch of cool stuff!

It idles just fine, after it warms up. I have to hold a little bit of throttle after a cold start. Haven't noticed any real gas mileage drops yet.

Your choke intake jets are probably clogged. These are located in the float assembly.  You know that tube with the o-ring on it on the float?  At the other end is a jet.  If it's clogged, you won't have a choke.  Clean it out with a piece of brass wire from a brass wire brush and/or compressed air.
