Is there a trick?

Yeah it's a pain and I can't get mine either. You could probally get to it easily with the wheel off but that's a pain in the ass. Some people use a big screwdriver and a hammer.

It's a matter of patience, the spanner doesn't fit easily, but fiddling with it sideways works and eventually you can sit it enough on the collar to twist it... big screwdriver and hammer work too... No need to take the wheel off...

Yeah, its a pain in the azz! I've got the stock tool kit and it still stinks. And I can't hardly tell what setting its on. I hate the gs rear....need a sv or a kat shock.
If it comes out of your body you shouldn't be afraid to hold it in your hand! :o

I think the kat shock is actually worse to adjust. The collar is a little bit shorter than the stock one. I think I'm going to have to pull the lower bolt and move one of the dog bones out of the way to get to a higher setting.

The motorcycle is no longer the hobby, the skill has become the hobby.

Power does not compare to skill.  What good is power without the skill to use it?

Just tried big screwdriver&hammer.

Works like magic.

I'm 195lb with gear on.Is preload on 60 OK for my weight?

Thanks for the tip!

Flywheel

Using a long (12" shaft) screwdriver as a lever works fairly well (even on a Katana shock). As far as I could tell, it didn't damage the adjustment collar. It's a bit awkward to get any tool near it, but in the end, no disassembly is required.
