GS horsepower?

I've seen varying numbers on the GS horsepower.  Some sources say ~40, and some say~52.  What is the best estimate?  Why the big variation among the sources?  Do other motorcycles' listed horsepowers vary this much?

I had mine dynoed for free at bike week last year...stock...36.8hp
FK5 / SM2 / 15t / 41t / sv650 shock ... -->GSX-R600k7
Steez...

I wanna know what idiot says 52... I doubt you'd see that even after rejet/lunchbox/full exhaust.

Hang out there, we may flame, but we don't hate.

My attitude is in serious need of readjustment, and I'm ok with that.

dgyver

37-40 is typical for a basically stock GS. With overbore, cams, carbs you can expect 50-55.
Common sense in not very common.

Wait!!! The GS produces horsepower?? :o  i thought they measured it in hamsterpower

The Buddha

Yup, it makes as much power as a hamster that is about to be stepped on by a horse ...
Cool.

Mine currently makes the same power as a hamster that has already been stepped on by a horse.   stupid carbs...

I dyno'd mine when I needed a tune up...  33.6 HP at the wheel

I'm guessing new plugs added 3 HP.

WREX

at the crank, at the wheel, different dyno, different day - it all makes a difference.   it's just not that consistent a science however you cut it.  besides, with the gs, it's in the "not much" range anyway :)

ohgood

enough to:

get a ticket in any state in the US.

burn a rear tire.

kill you.

iirc 36-40 is 'normal' with anything else being quesitonable.

Yes

Oh Hell Yes

Dunno, don't plan on finding out

Last Bike Night here Mine put out 41.8 :icon_razz:

As soon as my Flux Capacitor gets installed I'll have about 152 hp at the rear wheel, on my GS.

Ah, the Flux Capacitor, the ultimate high performance mod.

Finally got a good job.  Hooray me!!!

I still love beer.  Hooray me!!!

I saw back to back runs of a GS...stock run was 35.4rwhp.  The second run was stock jetting and full exhaust and pods and she put down 38.9 and was pretty ill.  The third run she had new carb guts and an ignition advancer and she put down 44.4hp.

Had the pleasure of seeing an EFI 555 turbo put down 72rwhp not too long ago.

Here are the HARD NUMBERS (real data, no drivel)....

GS500E ('01)

HP- 39.2@8500RPM

TQ- 26.6@7000RPM

1/4 Mi- 13.65@95.5

Wet Weight- 424 LBS

....according to MOTORCYCLIST MAGAZINE.  Gotta love the back page. :thumb:

WREX

with the figures listed down to a tenth of a horsepower - are you guys really getting that same tenth with back to back dyno runs, bike unchanged, same dyno, same day?  if you do 10 runs, are you ever getting that same reading down to the tenth more then once?

makenzie71

well I saw an EX once dyno 62.4rwhp three times in a row...each run was within a few hundredths of one another and were done about an hour apart.

WREX

i think that scenario is the exception, not the norm.

besides - in the context of this discussion, they're all different bikes and different dynos that we're trying to compare, dunno...

RVertigo

Do people actually pay for dynos on a GS?  Dyno days man...  33.6!!!!!
