Stock airbox boots are a PITA...

Anyone have tips on how to get the damn stock airbox back on? I've got the carbs back on the bike, and I can't get the boots to both sit properly on the carbs. One is always pinched on the bottom or top. It takes several minutes of struggling just to get one on right, and inevitably the other one isn't properly seated and I have to take it off.  :icon_confused:

Is there an easier way to do this???

I have found it easier, per someone else's suggestion, to attach the carbs to the airbox BEFORE putting it back as a unit into the frame and onto the engine.  Thats what I do every time and it seems to work pretty well, its just a tight fit getting it back in.  :thumb:

Grargh. If I don't get this thing on in the next 30 minutes or so I might have to try that.

Grease the inside it'll be easier and just work it on...( I hope I won't be TF'ed :oops:)

oh also if you look at the boot that goes between the carb and the airbox, you'll notice that the boot from the airbox is an oval shape that will match the oval shape of the carb...make sure that that didn't rotate such that you're trying to put the small part of the oval onto the large part of the carb   if you get what I mean.

Oh yeah if it gets pinched and your hand can get trough the box just push the rubber with your fingers  ( there I go again  :oops:)

Thanks guys I got it. Geez my big sausagey fingers had trouble fitting down there...

Got the bike all back together. Battery isn't holding enough charge but there was gas in the float bowls so I tried push-starting. No dice. Engine started to go but didn't catch.

I noticed while it was on Prime the tank petcock was leaking gas at an alarming rate. Very glad I only put a gallon in. Not sure if it's the 5/16" fuel line I replaced the old one with, or a bad seal between the petcock and tank. The 5/16" line is much larger OD so there was no room to put a clip on there to tighten it down. I took teh tank off the bike, tightened the screws on the petcock (could only get them maybe 1/4 turn tighter). When I turned the tank petcock back on and sloshed the gas around, no leaks this time, so hopefully that solved the problem. Guess I should still suck it up and get the proper fuel line. Once I do that and get a battery maybe this damn thing will finally start running (and I can begin working on the other problems!)

I was actually toying around with that idea while struggling with the thing... Wondering how much it would cost to get a lunchbox or pods and rejet...

The lunchbox runs 35-40 at most auto parts stores :thumb: they usually have to order them but it only took one day for mine to come in :thumb:  and i bought a set of jets off of srinath for dirt cheap compared to the kits :thumb:

Well once I get the bike running again and back on the road I'll start considering mods.  ;)

I know you've already got it on, but I've found it much easier to put the airbox back on if you completely remove the clamps first.  Without the metal ring in the way the airbox slides right on.  Then put the clamps back on an tighten.

Wait ... so those just slip over both carbs without a box or anything ? Kinda like pods but as one unit ? I know little to nothing about carbs , so sorry f it's a dumb question  :dunno_white:
