bike dies suddenly

I'll be ridin along then my bike just dies like its out of fuel(its not on prime this time),so i switch it to reserve and it fires right up and runs fine,theres only 25 mile on a fresh tank.this has happend 3 times now and is getting anoyying  ,and i really dont like riding around in reserve even if i watch my mileage.thanks

perhpas your main fuel pipe is blocked with something? may be worth removing the tank and blowing air down the pipes to make sure they are clear. would be my first thing to do anyways (after checking to make sure fuel pipe is connected obv  )

do you have a tank bag on your bike.....


or



take off lid
and listen as you slowly open the gas cap
do you hear a rush of air....
if you do....it will start up right away and give you another 25 miles....

no nothing is covering the gas cap,everytime i'm forced to do a roadside gas check,its loud around me with cars goin by(prolly thinkin poor bastard too).it shouldnt be a clogged line cause i put it on reserve and i runs fine,Its only once and a while though.

Have you checked your pipes are connected to the taps the right way round?

yeah fuel lines are all connected right

hopefully this will help,i went out for a ride to check out what was goin on in the fuel lines,with the petcock in the "on" pos. theres an air gap between the end of the line that goes into the pet. when i give it throttle nothing happens.But when i put it in reserve and give it gas the gap goes away and line fills right up of fuel.

maybe misbehaving vacuum petcock? If it runs in prime reliably but not at "on" then maybe theres an issue witht he vacuum diaphragm. My bike is actually missing its vac petcock, gas runs straight to the carbs (not recommended) so I haven't had much troubleshooting experience there.

Its probably the damn petcock.  So a search on "petcock" and you can read all about it.

The gist is that the stock vacuum operated petcock on the GS is crap and can't supply the carbs with enough gas during extended high throttle running, such as on the interstate.  The carbs run low and the bike conks out. Put it in reserve or prime or even give it a few minutes and the carb bowls will refill and the bike will start up again.

Mine would conk out at open throttle on fuel starvation.  The vacuum line to the petcock was a loose slip fit and almost falling off.  I replaced it with a new auto weight 5/16" fuel line AND a clamp to make sure.  No problems since.  Just a clamp would likely fix this for most people.
