I just purchased a 1993 gs 500 for my gf.  It has a problem im not sure about.  The bike will idle fine for about 30 seconds then it will slow down and  stall.  Then I will see gas dripping from the hose that comes to the bottom of the airbox.  When riding the bike it runs fine since it is using the fuel and not flooding out except when at lights.   I checked the spark plugs and the left one is all carboned up and the right one is a nice amber color.  I pulled the carbs as I suspected the floats to be bad looks good.  I put them in a bowl of water and no airbubbles or sinking.  The needles also look good with no real wear.  Could it be one of the O rings?  I bought a gasket kit with all the o-ring's and needle valve assemlys waiting on that to come in.    I put a fuel filter on since the tank has some rust.  Anybody have any ideas?  I forgot to mention the bike has 2800 miles.  Thanks Erik

The bike is 10 yrs old and only has 2800 miles on it. That's 280 miles a year, not very much. No wonder it has rust, and if it's a lot of rust, the flakes will clog the float needle open causing the leakage.

Rust could be the factor but when I cleaned the carbs and put a fuel filter on it still did the same thing flooding out.  The tank does have rust but its not real bad.  I plan to use Kreem in the tank on the off season.  Thanks for the suggestions.  If you have any more keep them comming.  Im hoping it might just be a needle valve seat.

can-can

My opinion, for what it's worth, is definately the needle.  My 97 with less miles had the same problem. Tore down the carbs and cleaned the shaZam! out and haven't had problems in two years. Good luck with yours!
I regret that I have but one ass to ride a bike with.

My '96 had about 1300 miles, had trouble starting, backfires, etc.  Of course, I bought it knowing I'd have to redo the carbs.  Before cleaning, we joked that the bike had 'turbo boost'.  Bike would bog and suck until given enough gas to reach 4k+ rpm's, then off you went!  Runs nicely now.  :)  Well, at least nice enough to not make me irritated.

Also, you might as well put in a fuel filter if you got tank rust going on (just to repeat everyone else's advice).  Considering how carbs weren't taken care of, might want to check hoses, cables, lubrication, etc for deterioration.  Riding wears bits out, but at least you check them cause you ride.

Remind me in September to get working on the above paragraph.   Can't take bike with me overseas!

It doesn't even nessisarily have to be crud in the float valve. Could be the needle tip has hardned too much or is mis-shapen. Also make sure the carbs are ballenced.

Thanks for the suggestion I got.  I wanted to let everyone know its running great now.  I replaced the needle valve assemblys and O rings.
