fuel in oil

I hadn't touched the bike for two weeks and I went to start it yesterday.  I noticed the tank was dry, but it didn't have much in it before and I had been dealing with leaks so I didn't think much of it.  When I cranked it over it started spewing thinned out oil out of the oil filter cover.  I had the petcock turned off so I don't see how this could have happened, unless the petcock is bad?  I turned it off at the tank and drained the bowls this time, but I'm wondering how it could've happened in the first place.  Any ideas?

Well I guess 'on' which shouldn't be on without vacuum.  I meant 'not in prime' basically.

Yeah, I know... I had just changed it too!!  It literally hadn't been run on the new stuff:(

Don't bother changing the filter again since it isn't dirty. The little bit of gas that remains in the oil that dosn't drain out will evaporate after a couple long rides. Or you could just loosen the filter cover slightly to get the last bit of oil out of there. Either way it shouldn't do any harm. In fact a little bit of gas can act like a motor flush and helf clean out your engine.
