There were both, a CB500 and a CB550. If memory serves, the 500 was a twin and the 550 was a four.  I believe wcardozo99 is referring to a late model CB500 that is available in Europe and elsewhere, (Canada?), that competes directly with the GS500 and Kawasaki's "also-not-for-sale-in-the-US" ER-5 - a sort of naked version of the 500 Ninja. The CB is a twin and comes faired or unfaired similar to the SV line.

he might be referring to the GB500 which is single cyclinder, cafe styled bike that looks like it's straight outta the 50's isle of Mann TT.  They were only imported to the Us in 89-90.  I want one so badly.  There's actually alot of sites dedicated to them.. There's one with sounds... o my god... i love that sound.

 It's a 500cc 8 valves watercooled twin ( like the Ninja 500 ) that makes 58hp.   A new model is coming ... it will rock.

The Cb 500 is listed in Europe, I did my direct access training on one, it's the equivalent model to the GS, water cooled is the only big difference and a couple more horses, and a grand more (in UK) My local Honda dealer says that supplies are now very limited due to a production shortfall, something a bout a factory being two years late in coming on line.

In the 70's there was a bike that was called a 500four. Its model designation was CB500 if I am not mistaken. The bike later grew a CB officially when it grew to a 550, then more letters were added till it was the CB550SC which was a nitehawk.
Of those times I think
1. Hondas had reliability but not much else.
2. Yamahas the XS and XJ series had the fun factor by nothing else.
3. Suzukis had performance and nothing else.
4. Kawasakis had looks and nothing else.
Just IMHO...no fact or other aspects have no bearing on this.

Yes to the above, the bike listed in US as Nitehawk is sold in UK as CB250 and the NH750 was sold as CB750, now not available in UK and pretty obviously the CB500 sits fairly in between. It's also sold as CB500S with a half fairing (S=Sports)

I used to walk past one every day in an apartment buildings lot next to were I work,  it was one of the biggest factors in me getting a bike, every day walking past such a sweet looking little bike.  It was a blue '89 in mint condition.  Jsut looked like a beutiful bike, much nicer looker than the GS in my opinion.   I think the only sold them in Canada for '89 and '90 though so I didn't look to hardto try and find one to buy.

it drives me crazy that you can't get onto sport/standard that's less than the GS and even that is no more.

Anthing below 500cc is now mini cruiseresque.

I'm a big  fan of small displacement bikes.  I think they are much better to learn on and damn they are fun to ride.

nope the cb 500 replaced the 73 cb 450 in 74.  they also where making the cb550.    i had a 73 cb 450 back in the day and lusted after a cb 500. but the 500 was not the bike the cb 450 was,so it died.    see ya.

the old cb500 was a twin,ckeck the OLD honda book's.    the illustrated motorcycle legends  honda.  by roy bacon has one in that book.   trust me im old.    see ya.

I still can't forgive Honda for stopping the import of the Transalp. I rode my bother's for a few days last month when I was in Italy and it's such a marvelous bike. Of course, that I was riding in the Alps helped too  :mrgreen:
I'd buy one right away if it was imported again.

Yeah, nice bike the Transalp but not for the short in stature. I'm only five eight (or 1.75M) so its a non starter for me. Same engine in the shaft drive Deaville but it looses a lot of zip. All of which brings me back to why a rode the CB500.
