Oil on my left boot

D'OH!  Sprung a rather sudden leak...  It looks like it's coming from the left side cover thingy-ma-bobber......     

I just sold my truck, so I can't really leave the GS at a shop for days.

It looks like I need to replace part #15 here:  http://www.bikebandit.com/partsbandit/showschematic.asp?dept_id=705201

Any thoughts or advice?  I'm not exactly a wrencher...  In fact, I'm more of a wrenchtard.  I'm just barely smart enough to change my oil and put on a new chain the lazy way (Running the new chain through with the master link from the old chain).


So...  What do you guys think?

I thought chain lube too... I've stopped for gas before and guys have been like, "dude your bike is F#$ked.... It's leaking oil..." yeah, it's chain lube.

Except that my chail lube is thicker than my oil...  And there's oil on the front of the engine...  And oil on the ground...

I thought Chain Lube myself...  I was really hoping it was chain lube.........

I guess I could double-check......

OK...  I added a pic to the first post.

I cleaned it off last night and I found new oil around the area in the pic.....  If it's not coming from that seal, any idea where it might be coming from?

Yarrr you've sprung a leak matey

Just order yourself a new gasket, and clean both mating surfaces, put a little grease on the gasket when installing to prevent it from shifting and don't use in RTV silicone/Yamabond. THere is a small hole that has pressurized oil and if you use yamabond and plug the hole you will be sad

So...  If I pull that side off, is there going to be a little oil coming out or a lot?

Depends on whether it's going to be upright or on it's side.  IIRC, you can lean it over and change the gasket without changing the oil.  Probably easier to just change the oil.

I guess I'll be looking for a gasket scraper and maybe that spray on crap...  I sure hope I can borrow the wife's car, since the meany is off getting a little work done and some new shoes....

Well if anyone cares, I bought some gasket cleaner (Like spray-on Paint Thinner) and a scraper...   I eventually won.  It took like 5 hours total. 

But, hey...  My boot isn't coated in oil any more.

Surprisingly, no...  I think I was one twist away from broken bolts...  But, I resisted the urge to twist 'em off.  YAY!   


Now...  I just gotta switch the fuel lines back to normal and my GS will be as good as it was 3 months ago.
