My GS500E Custom build project

I picked up a 93 GS500 a couple of weeks ago (has some motor problems, but that's another story) and it came with an extra frame and title.

I also picked up a 93 GSXR 750 at the same time. My reasoning is that it's been 10 years since I've ridden a sportbike and jumping right on the GSXR will not teach me anything.  In order to really learn how to ride, I wanted a good handling bike that had reasonable limits and would't immediately kill me when I roll on the throttle. Hence the GS500!

I can't really leave well enough alone, so I started modifiying the extra frame for the GS500 immediately!

I chopped the rear subfame to fit a R6 SharkSkins tail on. I'll be patching and reinforcing the frame for extra rigidity as well. I plan to make this a very streamlined and stripped down street bike that I can take to the mountains or to ThunderHill Raceway on the weekends.

This is just the start! I'll post updates as it moves forward!

Buy a Dgyver/JamesG tail ... that tail being fatter than the whole rest of the bike looks just plain stupid.
The one and only tail IMHO that fits a GS, that came from a bigger sportbike and looks OK (just OK not great cos its also wide as a mofo) is a F4/F4i tail. It sneaks under that too fat problem by being a bit rounded instead of being angular. Still fat, just more like Queen Latifa fat instead of Roseanne fat.

F4 tail is nice   Isn't that subframe already bolted on.......meaning you'd just have to mod the gs frame

No...the GSXR motor is going in the GSXR.....I'll be doing a similar build project on that bike after I finish this one.

This tail doesn't present itself as too large on the the GS at all. In person it doesn't look odd or awkward and fits the lines nicely. I'll be swapping the GSXR front end onto the GS500 as well, so that will help "bulk" out the front end a bit.

I test fit the GSXR tail on the GS...but it just looked too.....dated and bulky. I'm a big fan of minimalist looks, if I could get a smaller...sharper tail I would, but I just couldn't find anything that I really liked (plus this race tail only cost me $50 shipped!!)

I think the tail looks good. How are you going to do the exhaust?

dgyver: I'm planning on doing the exhaust either up at a steep angle like or under the frame. See pics below: I'm not at all sure that there will be enough room under the frame, and I don't wan't to sacrifice the ground clearance for hard cornering, so we'll see what happens. I'm only 5'8" tall and prefer to have the bike fairly low so I'm not always on my tippy toes, that might count the under frame exhaust out as well.

Hacking on motorcycles is SOOOOO easy compared to what I'm used to doing.

bombadillo: The car in the backround is one of my other babies. It's a 1986 Corolla GTS with a Honda S2000 motor transplanted. It does double duty road race and drift and is an absolute blast to drive.

Spent Friday fabricating the new rear subframe, but haven't had a chance to weld it on yet.

Also fitted the 93 GSXR 750 front forks to the bike! Tried a couple different methods for mouting the forks, but in the end the GS500 stem just didn't protrude far enough into the upper GSXR tripple clamp for my comfort. I machined the spacer for the standard and often suggested method for the swap, but wasn't  quite happy or secure with it. I ended up maching down the GSXR Stem so that I could slide the upper bearing down farther and use a bearing spacer on top. Not quite as pretty, but seemed a lot stronger.

I measured the GSXR 750 stock rear shock to the GS500 stock shock and in it's max down position the GSXR unit is only about 1/4" longer. With a bit of modification to the lower clevis mount on the bottom of the shock and a bit of grinding on the pivot mount that it attatches to it fit very nicely (with little room to spare!!). This GSXR shock is the fully adjustable unit with the remote resevoir.

So now the bike has GSXR 750 suspension all the way around!!!

I cleaned up the stock GSXR 750 rear sets as well and test fit them. As noted in the FAQ, they'll fit with just a minimum of work.

I'm absolutely loving the stocky appearance the bike is taking on!

This is gonna be a mean machine ,, Cant Wait , Damn , looks like im going to have to do a front end swop , but the problem is , i have no real clue how im going to do it , even with the guides , i think ill mess it up , im going for a katana , for *ease*
but its not gonna be easy
