Ready to put the gs back together and can't figure out where this hose goes. I looked in the clymers but couldn't find it. The hose is attached to the battery on the right hand side. here is a picture. Only thing I need to know before I can put the gs back together and go for a ride.

If that's the battery breather hose that you are referring to, the tube should be routed down the inside of the right side of the frame. There are small clips on the frame to hold and position the hose. The end of the hose should extend 2-3" below the frame and peg assembly on the right side of the bike. The airbox breather, gas tank vent hose and carb vent hose are all gathered together in that area as well, at least on my 49 state '89.
It's not how fast you go, rather "how" you go fast!

Can you trace the hose to the Battery?  Looks like the battery breather to me...  I can't think of what other hose would be under the seat.  Like pnaberhaus said, it routes down the right side with the Airbox Drain hose and the Gastank breather.

BTW...  Is your battery named Mel?

Yes,  it gets drunk then blames all the craburation/fuel starvation problems with the GS500 on the jews.

So it doesn't hook on to anything and its purpose is to get air to battery? Sorry if it seems to be a stupid question.
Thanks for all of your answer you guys kick butt.

If that's an aftermarket battery, it may not have a breather...   :dunno_white:  The Stock GS battery has a breather, so you run the tube out of the way...  'cause flammable vapors around your crotch are bad.

It has 2 purposes, its an overflow tube and breather. An unsealed battery will get warm in use and give off flamable vapours which without a breather pipe to allow them to disperse away from the bike could build up inside the battery and cause the casing to split. Also if your bike goes over on its side, or if the battery or the bikes charging system develops a fault and the battery overheats and decides to puke its sulphuric acid guts up its got somewhere to go. When routing the pipe make sure the end is lower than and away from the frame or any paintwork....battery acid makes a very good paintstripper!

labor intensive but well worth it. if you apply with care it won't peel at all. I did mine a year ago and didn't winter the bike well oops.  :cookoo:

bike sat for three months with half a tank of untreated gas and there were no problems with chunks of peeled lining or anything like that when I started it up in the spring. I highly recommend the stuff
