I was on my way to ACC yesterday morning, when at the NW corner of 183 and Lamar, a cager (minivan)  :cookoo: came out of a U-turn yield and cut across three lanes. I was in the middle lane, going about 45. I came down on my brakes midway through the intersection, and low sided it at about 25-30. The best I can recall is my front end hitting his rear tire spinning the bike around, while his right rear tire ran over my front (its a bit blurry, not sure if thats exactly what happened). Luckily, I sustained minimal damage, as I held on to the bike and let it take the beating as long as i could. Fire department showed up first, followed by the ambulance and the cops. Response time for the fire department was <3 minutes, they are fast. The other guy got cited for "failure to yield." Attempted murder would have been nice too.

I went to Seton later that morning, hung out in the emergency room until i was admitted. When I told the nurse how fast I was going, I was suddenly rushed to trauma and surrounded by a swarm of doctors, who all seemed to think I was dying, while the chaplain and social worker approached my girlfriend, and freaked her out.

A few x-rays later they released me with a prescription for vicodin. I still slept pretty shitty though, and I'm finding new sources of pain every hour. Bruised and battered, but I was wearing gloves, helmet, and jacket, jeans, and over the ankle boots and got away with minimal road rash.

Wear your gear! More often than not i see guys on their gixxers with shorts and flipflops. My jeans got a hole in them pretty quick.... and my sketchers definitely took a beating. To quote my ninja500 buddy, "I'd rather  sweat than bleed!"

Allstate's adjuster has yet to contact me, but I think they may total the bike. Anyone know the value of a '98 / how much I should expect?

...lucky to get away this easy...

foobar

damn man. sorry to hear about your wreck. glad you are here to tell us about it though.

you can check the value of your bike here: http://www.kbb.com/kbb/OtherVehicles/default.aspx

I know what you're saying about the guys in shorts. Yesterday I saw a guy with no shirt and shorts. Probably had sandals on too. Glad to hear you're not too beat up.

Well, I spoke with the adjuster, nothing's concrete yet, but looks like it's pretty cut and dry. 2k seems a little low when you count how much love, sweat and tears went into the bike (blue book), not to mention the custom paint. maybe that should be part of the pain and suffering claim.

Glad you're alive and well...

Will you get any money for replacement gear?

they won't offer to replace the gear, but they are required to.  It was property damaged in the accident :thumb:  Also, they are required to pay msrp on the gear, if the specific model has been discontinued they may reimburse the msrp of a product they find of similar quality :thumb:

Yeah, 183 and Lamar is just about as biker friendly as the east side of I-35 around Cesar Chavez...

I don't like making generalizations, but the damn Mexicans around here will run a stop light, run a stop sign, try to run YOU over, then drive 5 under the speed limit. At least everyone else who blows the stop light/sign will haul ass down the road too.

Ditto on the gear ... Glad you're OK fit enough to type and the MOFO got cited. And, Hopefully you dont live in a no fault state.
Around here ... the bigger the bike, the less the gear ...
Hayabusa and ZX 14 literally is a nudist colony ...
Yea ... bruddas also wear chrome helmets and sleeveless T's showing off their biceps ... never mind they have bellies to rival a Hayabusa's tank, and the bike is lowered to 24 inches ... stretched 3 feet and cant ride or maintain it worth a darn ...
I hear the freaking motor wheeze and spit through either an exhaust port or head gasket, and the brother is very very concerned its got a little dirt on the under tail. He's busy cleaning it.
There is another friend of mine, riding a GS, who has entirely not noticed the points cover ... which was cracked and barely hanging on from a previous drop ... is now gone.
All I can say is ... WTF is wrong with people ...
They will clean and polish sheite till it shines ... and entirely ignore the fact that it doesn't start or run very reliably, misfires often while riding and the chain is tight enough to bounce a quarter on ... and doesn't charge the battery.
Cool.

I saw a guy in a tank top and sandals throw a little ass 1/2 helmet on and mount a brand new busa that he stalled out in the middle of the street. I almost pissed myself laughing

yeah I'm definitely claiming all of my gear and my mp3 player too. it was in my right pocket, playing "road hogs" by stone sour when i crashed. go figure.

sri, that is too funny... hey can we get some squiddy looking emoticons?  ;)

come to think of it, my points cover definitely took a beating in the crash.

the intersection (look closely and you can see the scratch marks on the pavement):

the cover, thanks sri:

overal from front. lowside on right (dont have right side view). check out the handlebar. Damaged the tank on top. clutch lever broke off (how?)

I'm hoping that the frame is straight, this would be a good time to take everything apart and take it to the powdercoater. :)

I'm hoping there's no engine damage. after I crashed, the bike revved to hell, and i ran to kill the ignition, but the 5 seconds been enough to starve the engine for oil? comments? it was laying on its right side (facing traffic) and spewing black smoke, and sounded like a screaming banshee at redline (as always).

consider fuel leaking over to the right carb starving the left, and oil being in the right side of the case. where is the pickup?  :dunno_white:

for sure. have you crossed lamar and airport? everyone turning from sb lamar onto airport runs the light - like 5-6 cars sometimes. i honk, but what difference does it make?

DUDE! You can wear head phones while riding???  :o   Not in VA... that would probably void the whole deal if the wreck happened here!

You do have me second-thinking my whole shorts, t-shirt and tennis shoes combination....

Glad to hear you didn't get seriously hurt.

spc

I would do a lot of research into your state laws and your specific policy before trying to claim your mp3 player,  at least in ga if they find that out you're f%&ked regardless of fault.  good music choice though :thumb:

Oni

Glad you came away in one piece.

Similar accident happened in my neck of the woods this weekend.
Driver U-turned in front of the guy.  He didn't make it.

DO NOT CLAIM IPOD!  On a motorcycle this will make your Claim a hell of alot harder to get, Granted they have to prove that you were wearing the phones but all it takes is one witness.

sorry to hear about the crash man

Call the COPS!

No really, if you see the same blatant actions every day, at the same intersection, demand a speed trap -  er 'traffic enforcement' for the intersection.

It usually takes 2-3 days for them to setup, but if you actually ride over and THANK the officer, and tell him YOU were the one that requested it, and how great a job he's doing keeping your safer, he'll really appreciate it. Or at least they are taught to act like they do.

I've phoned in redlight and stop sign areas befor and within 24 hours the signs were changed and police waiting for people to run them.

I've also gone over to say 'thanks' for writing tickets to folks doing 70 MPH in a 30 with blind turns and hills. The cops are usually quite surprised and taken back by someone noticing they aren't all assholes.

It's your tax dollars, make them work for you.  :thumb:
