i getting a pistol for my 21st next month and im asking about which cartridge would be best.  i dont like the .45 bc my wife couldnt hadnle that much recoil.  a 9mm is just to weak so ive been dreaming of getting the xd40.  had anyone owned an xd or a .40. i would like info b4 i make a final decision.  thanks much.

Your looking at the wrong gun if the recoil on a .45 is too much for her.  Try H&K  I know a couple of very small framed girls who carry em and don't have a problem with the recoil.   God I love that SF edition model 23.....If I had the $$ :o :o  Haven't reall heard much about the xd, sorry

Actually they are all nice caliber guns to keep around.  The 9mm isn't weak, ammunition choosen makes a huge difference.  If you use full metal jackets then you are just going to put a hole in things.  get a bullet that hits and expands like hydrashocks or something similar and a 9 has plenty of stopping power.  .40 and .45 are also good, a good glock .45 is a smooth gun.  My friend has a slew of guns two of which are a rugar .40 and a glock .45.  The glock kicks less than the rugar, so recoil depends a lot on the gun.

I have a 9, but my go-to home defense weapon is either a 38 revolver or a 12 guage 870 pump with 18" barrel.  If your anything like me, you'll want more than one.  If I were buying a new semi pistol, it would probably be a 40 cal sig, but the Springfield is a great gun.  I bought the snub 38 for the wife, but ended up really liking it myself.  I've been building AR's lately, and i'm gonna build an AR pistol :o

The bartender at the club I work at carries a H&K .45 with Black Talons her husband got his hands on.  She laughs causze I just carry a kel-tec .380

first question to ask yourself is what are you going to use it for?  If just for HD, a bigger caliber has more knock-down power, but if its a tin-can killer (like all my guns are) its usually cheaper to feed a smaller cal gun.  Whatever you buy, training is key, so look at ammo prices too.

I have a Glock 22, .40S&W, and a Bretta 96, also a .40.  I love them both.  I like the 40, its got good range and knock down power.  I dont like the XD, it feels funny when shot.  The Glock fits just right in any ones hand and stays nice and level even under rapid fire.

OT: anyone else played with the beretta cx4's?????  I love that damn thing in .45 :icon_twisted:  I'd take it with a modded clip over a fuckin M-4 anyday :thumb:

i haven't seen the cx4 yet, but i did get to shoot a PS90 (5.7) the other day, it was pretty cool.  I've seen 9mm M4's... i wonder how those big pistol cals group at 100 yds?

.45 may be a long recoil, but it's slow...  9mm recoil is fast and snappy...  I actually prefer the slow recoil, 'cause (for me) it's easier to nail the target each round...  With a 9mm, I tend to be faster, but all over the place.  THe .45 may be slower, but I stack the shots mm apart.

Just like a bike a firearm can be tuned to meet your needs, regardless of caliber.  A well sprung .45 can drop an entire clip in a 1.5 inch shot group in less time than a stock S&W 9mm can turn out 5 rounds with similar accuracy.  If you want a .45 get it and go to an established gunsmith/ have an on-post armorer do it in off time.  Just tell them the handling characteristics you want in the weapon,  they'll figure out the springs you need. :thumb: :thumb:

Hmmm Maybe look into .50 .454 Casull or a .460 S&W. :thumb:   Really if I got anything it would be a .380 since the Shells are Cheaper than the 9mm or Maybe evn a .357. might Also Look into the Curio Calibers maybe a 7.56x 25 CZ52 It's the Same Caliber as the AK47/SKS 7.56x39 only 14mm  shorter Shell.

it all depends.  the 9mm is nice gun...they're smooth and cheap and can handle home defense and plinking without a hitch.  my 45, though, makes my pee pee a bit bigger everytime I pull the trigger.  I didn't like the 40 so I sold it...45 cal noise, 9mm damaged, and expensive to shoot.

Canuck

I am partial to the Sig S&W .40 cal, Well built and accurate.

my question is why? if you live in that much fear that you need a gun to feel warm and fuzzy perhaps you should move or get therapy  :cookoo:

I love the morons who think people get guns because they're scared.

other than hunting,  if you are not military or police you don't need one and don't know how to use it safely either.  most likely will be turned on you yourself.  now now no names :)
