Nothing wrong with Home Defence with a .22 or a .410.I have both and figure anybody that can get past my .22's and then my .410 is going to wind up in the ER after I get thru pounding on them.  They are really going to have to be really "Cranked" up to get past the .22.The .410 is Pretty much going to do more Damage than a .45 at close range. If they get thru my Pounding with my Fists and a USMC Ka-Bar then I figure they're Superman and I'll let Dad at them with the .357 and then the .30-30.

afi1- stay on topic if your gonna try to reply to someone and cut the fuckin caps.  My point was simply that at close range you should be able to execute a head shot 99% of the time.  If not, you need to train on your weapon and improve your shooting.
I have a friend with a clustered bronze star.  He ran 4 deployments in 5 years and spent a total of 6 months home in those 5 years before he was medical'd out due to a serious knee injury.  When he came back home he temporarily worked delivering pizzas.  On a delivery one night two gentlemen attempted to rob him.  They both had firearms aimed at him.  He shot both in the head. twice.  They fell to the ground still holding their weapons.  If he hadn't made headshots he would have sustained serious injury.  But he was well trained and reacted properly.  Sidenote: he was fired for carrying a weapon.  He's with Blackwater now making over 1k a day and has been in theatre for almost a year. (yup he;s got over 1/4 of a mil waiting for him when he gets home :o  )

Guns are bad.

They need too much cleaning after each use.

I should go target shooting again...  I haven't been in about 10 years or so.

You should try shooting black powder, then you'll winge about cleaning them.  :2guns:

I own a 92FS and a Colt 1991, both are great firearms but I'm way more accurate and consistant with the 9MM, I always have been too.  After 2000+ rounds through both , I'd say that I'm 30% more accurate and 20% quicker with the Beretta in a rapid fire situation (15 rounds in 10 seconds).  My take on pistol firepower is this, you can have an 18 inch cannon mounted to your wrist, that doesn't mean duck if you can't put the round where it's needed, buy what you can shoot well.  Rent as many firearms as you need for you to figure out which one fits best.  The XD40 is a great weapon, a decent amount more kick than the 92FS, but not terrible.  Also worth checking out, the Browning HiPower... beautiful.

Jughead, earlier in the thread you mentioned wanting a Ruger MK I with a 10 inch barrel. I had a MK II with the 10 inch bull barrel. It was very accurate from a bench but was a bit hard to shoot well off hand.

I also had a 6 inch bull barrel with the target trigger. That one I hunted squirrels with. I could consistently get head shots with it.

Very balanced and smooth trigger.

The new MK III's have a redesigned magazine eject button. Up by the trigger instead of down at the butt.

My feeling is its not the caliber, its the platform.

I have all three calibers now, and they all have their uses.  They also "act" differently.  The .45 and for the most part .40 have more of a "pushing" recoil.  The 9mm is much more "snappier".

The best advise I can give is shoot them all, and different weapons in each.  A beretta 92 in 9mm is going to feel much different from a kel tec p11 also in 9mm.  My wife now shoots my 1911 .45 with no problem and actually likes it better than her Glock 9mm.   If your wife is recoil sensitive, double the hearing protection.  Most recoil sensitive people are actually reacting to the sound, not the recoil.

alerbaugh

ill keep that in mind.  once we went to rent and shoot matching glocks...only thing was mine was a .45 and hers was a nine. she went off to the bathroom when i picked up her nine.  she came back and unknowingly picked up my .45...first shot she dropped it.  it was funny but i know i should have warned her.

have never owned a gun, but im looking forward to going to a range soon  :icon_mrgreen:

seems there is much more gun ownership/gun culture in the south, or in rural areas, where its more a part of life or something to do for fun. In the suburbs or in decent city neighborhoods it doesnt really seem necessary, having a gun is more like overkill/a bad idea. Violent crime here is not a huge problem.

I went on a bicycle ride once with my apartment manager at the time, an ex bouncer from texas who I had citizen-arrested a car prowler with a few weeks before. During our ride he mentioned he was packing a revolver. I was like dude, are you f'ing crazy? nothing is going to happen to us. he was being way paranoid, we had more chance of getting a shark bite than having a reason to use it. on the other hand, if we were walking at night in south central la it might be a good idea. nothing wrong with owning, but most non recreational gun owners are erring far on the side of caution, I think.

i know a guy who has a .44 magnum. ya know, the "dirty harry" style gun? 15 inches from tip of the barrel to the end of the grip. it's a massive weapon. feels like it weighs 15 lbs. prolly doesn't. he says he keeps it loaded with 600 grain. says it's his emercency weapon when he's hunting. claims it will drop a grizzly. hmm... dunno how much of what he's told me is true. except i have seen the gun and the ammo. WTF would u want something that big for? something like that for HD, you don't need to load it....just flash it and any person who values their life will run.
finally a homeowner!
