Guess it depends on what you want to term as a "Rebuild" My personal idea of a rebuild is to restore the engine to a "as new condition". This will involve a total strip-down of the engine and consequent action that will return all major components to within the tolerances and service limits laid down by the maker. This will involve a careful examination of the major components prone to wear-in-use, evaluation of condition, and determination of critical sizes and limits with accurate measuring equipment, then repair/reclaimation/replacement of those component parts that fall outside of the tolerances laid down by the manufacturer.....replacing gaskets and mains is a repair.........NOT a rebuild.
FYI the service manual lists over 40 different go/no-go measurements and service limits for the major engine components.

If you are gonna do a full rebuild, you need a set of internal and external micrometers, vee-blocks, a DTI and a good manual that quotes the service limits, if you are gonna do a repair, just tear the engine apart and replace anything that looks worn/damaged.

kinda sounds like that nose it makes when u shift down to first(holding the clutch in) when ur going to fast and it gets stuck in neutral and grinds the gears.

Sledge, sorry for the confusion, I am going to attempt to repair it. Can anybody give a good guess to what it sounds like the problem is? I'm thinking I just might try to sell it as-is, since I don't have much time or garage space at the moment.  :icon_confused:

This is just a guess, but it sounds like a spun bearing,a missing valve shim, bad tensioner,or the crank gear that drives the transmission.Just my best guess.
PICS are GONE never TO return.

Hard to say with any accuracy what the problem is. Diagnosing and pinpointing deep engine problems just by sound alone is very difficult, particularly when the engine is not physically there and you cant identify from which part the sound appears to be coming from. Your only realistic option is to buy a manual, read it through to give yourself an idea of what is involved then start pulling the engine apart and looking for the problem. I think whatever the problem is, it will be obvious when the cases are split, until then we are guessing and speculating.

Drain the oil and look for metal ...
Depending on what that metal is ... it can be a 100 things.
Cool.
