I think mine were listed under "suburban machinery type 2" or something like that. They are very rare on eBay. I have only seen them the one time.

Aww man...

Some type 1 bars!! Oooooo. I think they'd fit, too. Not sure, but I assume so.

The way they are shaped. the grip bars are welded on top of the main bar struts for type 2, whereas the type ones are welded onto the side. It produces a more "clip-on" type feel.

Type 1:

Type 2:

The Type 1 bars angle down more.

From Suburban-machinery.com
QuoteSV650 handlebar kit locates grips close to the 'S' model's position, approximately 3.5" lower and 1.0" forward compared to standard  SV and one inch higher than the factory "S" model handlebar.
Resulting weight transfer forward greatly improves front end feel.
Fits all years 99' thru 05'.
Designed to clear fork preload adjusters on all models.

Type #2
Intermediate handlebar, for a less committed position, one inch higher
and .466 inches farther back than the type #1 bar.
Designed to clear fork preload adjusters on all models.
Fits all years 99' thru 05'.

Yeah, it drops the bars forward and down, but not to the extreme of clip-ons.

Not to thread jack, but mind explaining how clip-ons differ in feel and performance from straight bars? I'm sure people may be curious on what is different between the two.

I've only had experience with them from sitting on them, but know that they are lower and narrower, which means less torque is applied per the same amount of force. The lower placement of them also means less torque is applied because your hands are more on top of the bars, rather than parallel with the rotation plane.

That typically translates to more difficult turning on low speed stuff, especially where you come close to full lock. There's not as much room for your hand in between the tank and the bars, which means it can be uncomfortable and a bit more difficult to control. Trade off is better high speed stability. This is because there is less torque on the bars, which means less little movements transferred to the wheel during a corner. It also places even more weight over the front wheel, which can get you out of the wind as well.

Thread revival... because I've been wondering and couldn't search the answer. And, I believe the input contained here contains helpful/relevant info.

I have been looking to changing the stock bars for a little while. I just can't get used to the "bicycle-ness" and wide angle of them. Plus, I would like a sportier positioning. My main question would be: which is it, the Suburban Machinery Type 1 or Type 2 bar that most closely mimicks the clip-ons? I couldn't find a post that said, "Type this" is exactly or resembles the clip-ons. How big is the difference between a Type 1 and 2.

It's so hard to find them on ebay these days (it's June 20, 2007). And it seems like a real pain to find and install the OEM Suzuki clip-ons in the U.S. Couldn't really find the seller who sells these on ebay either.

Thanks for looking.  :thumb:

Type 1's are more agressive.  The actual angles and such are on the wiki:

http://cgi.stanford.edu/~sanjayd/gs500/Upgrades/Handlebars

I'd say the Type 1's are closer to the clip-ons than the Type 2's (I have the latter).  It depends on what trade-off you're looking for (comfort vs agressive handling).
