VIN issues, doesn't seem to exist...

Allright I titled my new bike today and now I'm having that 'what did I just buy' issue... Hopefully nothing?

The BMV gave me issues, one of the VIN number is smudged on the sticker so it's hard to tell if it's an 8 or a 9. On the steering head, there's a scratch across two (different) numbers/letters so you can't tell if on is a 7/8 and the other is a D/C. Eventually we just went with the VIN on the title, since it matched possibilities on the bike, but then when they went to do the new title, the VIN didn't come up. They gave up after a few minutes and issued the title.

I came home and checked carfax. Sure enough, so such VIN. I tried with the variations of the letters you can't tell between two choices, no hits on any of those combinations either.

So I have a bike whose VIN does not seem to exist. Is that just a fluke, or something bad? Only thing I can think is that the bike was salvaged and written off, vin dropped out of the systems, and someone rebuilt it? Either that or it's just a fluke. The guy I bought it from had it since last september, hadn't ridden it much, and claimed he bought it from the original owners. He seemed to be straightforward.

Not sure what to think now... Either way the bike rides great and looks great, guess I shouldn't worry too much...

Ok I found a post on an MV forum about VIN checks, and about half the people said their VIN's came up on carfax and the other half got an invalid vin, and a few people mentioned their ducati's didn't show up either. So sounds like it's probably ok, maybe for some reason italian bikes don't get into the system :)
