Tach Problem

I have an 04 gs500f and my tachometer is acting somewhat strangely. It tends to jump around at higher RPMs or when accelerating and sometimes simply drops to 0 for several seconds at a time. This is obviously a tach issue, as I can hear the engine running normally.

I was reading through older posts and didn't see anything that related directly to my issue. A lot of the posts involved the cable tach, and from what I understand mine is electrical. I took apart the instrument cluster to look at the connections and everything seems fairly decent. Not sure what else to do. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Probably a bad ground or corroded/loose connection somewhere in the harness. It does not take much.

Does your bike sit outside?

I actually keep it in the garage most of the time. I got it recently though, so I'm not sure about the previous owner.

My 06 has done the same thing since new.  It hasn't done it since early Spring.  I hope it just craps out as I am still under warranty.  If it goes post Warranty I will trace the wiring and look for loose connections.

did they switch to an electronic tach because the old ones are cable driven?

yea they did ., i think post 01 models went Electric

+1.  The 2001 and 2002 are mechanical.
