Hi, this is my first post, but I have been lurking for a while now. Anyways, as to my problem. I was riding yesterday when I noticed that 1st gear was bogging down at 4500 to 5000 rpm. I was running WOT and it just wasn't really responding, but when I shifted to 2nd, it seemed as if it went away. Since I was only a few blocks from my brother's house, I stopped there and let the bike cool down. Cut to 2 hours later when I decided to ride home. I got it started just fine, but it was still bogging down at about 5000 rpm. Then, at a stop light, I was in first gear waiting for the light to change when the rpm's just dropped and the bike died. I had the clutch in all the way, which still felt fine - good resistance when manipulating it. I tried to rev the throttle, but it just wasn't responding.

So now the bike is dead, so I pushed it off to the side of the road into a parking spot. When I tried to start it up again, there was no response when I would hit the starter button, as if the key were in the off position. So I put it into neutral, and it fired right up. When I would go to give it some throttle, it would bog straight down and die. So, I put the clutch on all the way, started it back up, and decided to just ride it back to my brother's house and leave it in his garage. Well, after the bike was started, I shifted into 1st gear and it died IMMEDIATELY, as if I hit the engine kill switch. So, after thinking a bit, I decided to go into 2nd instead of first after getting it started. I shifted to neutral, with the choke on all the way, and went to shift into 2nd. Things going alright now, but the throttle is still acting funny, really bogging down when I would rev the engine. So I left the clutch on all the way and limped back the 2 blocks to my brother's house. I would have just pushed it, but I had to cross a major street, luckily at a stop light.

One other thing I did notice was when I was shifting, it was very difficult and there was a chattering noise, very loud, almost very fast paced clicking. It wasn't really a grinding noise, but it was similar to it. If anyone has any ideas, I would really appreciate the help.

Thanks,
Thurs

Welcome!

When was your last valve adjustment?

Make sure your battery terminals are tight.

Make sure your battery ground is connected, and make sure your engine ground (search 'engine ground' with the username 'Kerry') is connected.

Make sure your battery has fluid up to the proper levels (distilled water only).

Transmission...not sure, would have to hear/try it out for myself.

Power does not compare to skill.  What good is power without the skill to use it?

Check all the things Scratch said plus
check fuel lines for pinched areas
make sure the petcock under the tank is all the way on
turn the frame petcock to pri aka prime
The diaphram in my petcock may be bad and not letting enough fuel to the carbs.
There is a mod for the petcock do a search using Kerry as the user name
Check your plugs and set the gap tighter
check for a clogged air filter
If you check the valve to cam clearances also check timing chain tension, should be very tight
this is all I can think of for now
PICS are GONE never TO return.

Thanks for the replies. I'll have to check them on Sunday because I am at the fire house tomorrow. I'll report back with my results.

Also, I found this on the Wiki: http://cgi.stanford.edu/~sanjayd/gs500/Troubleshooting/BikeRunsBadly

hopefully this will help as well.

Again, thanks for the replies.
