Installing Bob's V&H Clone..

I got my Bob Broussard patent pending V&H clone advancer today in the mail. Installation was a breeze (provided you have the right tools to do the job).

The first thing I noticed is that there isnt much difference between a stock GS500 module and the modified one. I was expecting to see the slot in a totally different position. It seems its its just right there, the only difference being there is now a "hole" on the inside rather than the slot.

The immediate effect of installing is that my idle went up. It used to idle at 1000-1200 rpms but it settled at 1500 at startup and 2000 when warm. So i got to adjust that part.

Acceleration wise, yes there seems to be a faster acceleration or more response from the engine upto the first 5k rpms. However this could also be due to the fact that i filled my tires back up with air and my idle is high. I need to readjust all that to see full effect of this V&H close.

Might have to get me one of these, how does one do that?

The older GS 450 etc used to have a hole...till suzuki got all fancy and started slotting them. Cant wait...and to 3-4K is whaere the advancer makes a real diff...after that it electronically is more than 17 degrees anyway.
Cool.

I know.. im beginning to hate its freaky nature..

I wish srinath was in CA then he could look over my bike..

Next weekend (not this saturday) we are going to attempt to do some work on it. We did some work on it last saturday (i think it was that) and it did reduce teh vibrations. But there are still other issues.... the bike is just freaky...

I want to test out yours or johns bike just to make sure Im not hallucinating.. I mean i remember it being ultra smooth but its freaking me out that its not thesedays, maybe riding your bike or johns bike will give me an idea of what its supposed to feel like.

you gotta make one of the rides in order to do that. August 16th we're doing Ortega Hwy. We'll swap bikes for a bit.

Nope, gonna ride the bicycle in the canyons this weekend. Next weekend )(my birthday weekend) I'm gonna join up with some Bandit guys to do somewhere near Lake Hughes(?), Sand Canyon and Big T. Don't know where or when they're meeting yet though.

Hey cool! Ortega is in my back yard.  Aug 16th sounds great (if I may invite myself along).  I live right off the 5 fwy at Lake Forest Blvd.

Ortega is great but there are some REALLY great roads a little past Lake Elsinor.  A buddy I go riding with has a GPS and has found some great roads to ride.  There's is a hwy that winds through Idlewile and ends up in Banning that will knock your socks off.  Long sweepers, 3 and 4 turn shikains (can anyone spell that right please), nice clean road surfaces and 1/2 to 1 mile visability in lots of critical places.

From Ortega and the 5 fwy out through Lake Elsinor and a few miles of city riding, up to Idlewile then down to Banning is approx 140 +or - miles one way.

A great ride with some tasty breakfast or lunch stops along the way.  Nice mountain roads almost all the way except a short run on the 215fwy and then through a town for a few miles.

If anyone is interested, we could meet at my house here in Lake Forest, and we can take the back roads past Cook's Corner, out to Ortega.  I haven't met any of you yet in person, but I'm sure i wouldn't regret giving out my addres to any of you via Email if anyone's interested.

Or just meet at the Chevron station at the 5 and Ortega hwy.

What do you think Pablo, first let me know if I can tag along then let me know if you would like to make a day out of it.
By-the-way.... Happy Birthday

Hey Manjul...
Some bikes are buzzy...dont matter if I see them or own them...my 89 is the smoothest GS I have even seen. My 91 ironically is quite close. I rode a different 89 that wasn't that bad but was worse than the 91. My 90 was in fact the worst I have ridden ever. I have ridden a badly kept 91, an ok 93 another 91 and I think a 97 all of which had some bad vibes at some rpm or another. None as bad as my 90...That bike was buzzy as hell under 4K, they went away from 4-6K and came back after 6 and pretty much lasted all the way across to its useful rev limit but was less intense at higher rpms. Bar end weights help a bit, bar angle, grips, carb balance, jetting, tires and suspension all help a little but somehow dont eliminate the buzz. You may have one of these bikes. Maybe when you re build it you can get them all balanced and that may help.
Cool.

Paul, Check out the post: http://www.gstwins.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3059

Of course you're invited, as are all members and their (GS?) riding buddies. Since you're fairly familiar with the area I nominate YOU to be ride leader and sort out a good route for us (pretty please?) and a meeting place that will be easy to find (something you can post, maybe not your home address).  Figure it out and post a reply there. That would be awesome since Ortega is only like 30+ miles long and I personally hate riding freeways longer to a ride than the ride itself. if you have an idea for lunch spot too that'd be super.

Woohoo!

im going to sync balance everything this time around.. yeah that V8 shake is still there..

The problem i see is that about 2500+ miles ago she was perfectly smooth.. and then the problems started. Initially it was alright, not as bad, but these days for me to do like 60 miles is like hell...

In 2 weeks we will know what was wrong.. I am off to get the DIY carb sync tool and make one and I am off to go get my valve shims.

I will pick up the progressive springs, airfilter, valve cover gasket (possibly will need one) sometime next week.

Actually marucio's harley is a lot more less vibrations when it moves, it shakes when its idling but most harley's do but when riding it doesnt vibrate anywhere (handlebars are nice and comfy)..

Even marucio noticed it the other night the vibrations were off the scale..

By the way the ignition advancer did reduce some vibrations (or was it because i retightened the barends) so I can ride about 100 miles or so today.

Ok check compression in the 2 cyls...Maybe you have a cylinder that has sticking rings or some like that. However I have had the 2 cyls almost 10-12 psi apart and the bike still managed to be smooth enough. Nothing like that for my 89 though....the 2 are almost always within 3-5 psi of each other. Also the vlaves should be set very close...however I dont see that causing the problem you have...one side is noisier than the other if that was the case.
Cool.
