It sound like you already know the answer to your question.

They don't. They rip shread and tear, jeans don't melt thay are mad of denim. Synthetic fibers melt.
Why didn't you just go the whole way and buy me a f@#king Kawasaki you bastards.

Jeans will hold up well enough for up to ~50mph depending on how you land, roll, etc. Highway speeds shred jeans in like, 3 seconds. Normal commuting speeds and they will save you quite a bit of pain.

alpinestars makes a pair of pants called "street cargo pants" that have knee protectors in them and are a pretty relaxed fit, but have good bits in the waist for a secure fit. They retail $120 a pair, rule of thumb with alpinestars stuff seems to be to order one size above what you normally wear. I like them, easy to get on and off and offer quite good protection.

I went down in jeans and a jean jacket, last year. I rolled as I was sliding so that no one spot was on the grond for to long. My knee went through, becuase I tried to ride it out but I was to low on bad tires.

Lesson learned, now I ride with a leather jacket and at least jeans every time. I'm looking for knee pucks now.

Jeans. Hmm, those things made of cotton, and not even this thick:  ||

I've done some non-scientific testing with jeans, parachute pants, leather from a catchers mit, and an OLD pair of boots.

The items were subjected to 25 or so pounds of preasure (guestimate) against a grinding wheel (8") at around 3,000 rpm.

Here's what I found:

Jeans are gone less than a 1/2 a second after contact.

Parachute pants melt and adhere to whatever applies preasure.

Leather may 'hop' or grind slowly, but 1/8" of it is gone in 5-6 seconds.

There are better studies online, but I wanted to see AND SMELL the results without actually crashing.

I'll be buying a leather jacket after this. My tourmaster is comfy and all, but I don't think it has the very best protection.

You're fooling yourself if you think jeans (reinforced, whatever) will save your hide.

3000RPM on a 8" (diameter, I assume) wheel translates to 71.4mph. As noted, jeans don't hold up well in high speed crashes. However, you also must consider that you aren't necessarily sliding all the time, and are tumbling at one point or another. However, in normal commuting speeds will hold up surprisingly well, especially if you buy quality denim.

I've ripped through jeans falling on a concrete basketball court.  They were even good jeans (Levi, back when they were made in the US).  Anybody who trusts them to protect their skin in a crash is an idiot.  That includes you, Brian. :flipoff:  :icon_mrgreen: :icon_mrgreen: :icon_mrgreen:

In the spirit of mythbusting a claim that a local rider could drag knee on the street in jeans the duarability of 3 pairs of denim jeans were put to the test. A 90 degree right hand turn was made by a rider at 35mph wearing jeans over his leathers with no hard pucks under the jeans. He touched knee for less than 1 second each time. The least amount od damage was a quarter sized hole in the knee to a hole almost 1.5" in diameter.

If you don't believe it try it yourself with some friends.

Black Sunshine

I have a pair of biking jeans, reinforced in the knees and arse, pretty damn thick everywhere else.

If you can get into them (I found them stupidly tight) Draggin jeans are awesome, kevlar reinforced jobs- www.dragginjeans.com - watch the videos on there where they test them out by sliding on them while being towed.

Jake D

In my crash I slid the whole time.  I didn't roll one little bit.  Jeans didn't really do anything to protect me.  I can tell they didn't because there wasn't any areas on the jeans that had been in contact with the road that didn't disappear totally.  So if it got down on the ground, it was ground into my skin.  Literally.

In addition to full armoured kit I have a pair of these in black, they are a quality piece of kit.

Also I will confess to riding in "ordinary" denims from time to time.

I will admit to riding to work on Jeans day and knocking around town in jeans, I draw the line at slacks. I fully undersatand the possibility that I may go on a scar tissue weight loss program. Anything over a going to have coney's and get an ice cream cone ride see's me running home to change pants. This tends to keep me out of lots of spur of the moment hooliganism.

I'm with BP :o :o  I'll run to the store real quick in jeans, or sometimes to work.   But anything past that I gotta have armor :thumb: :thumb:
