kittens are great, but they eventually grow up into cats, and that I have little tolerance for..

Well, he doesn't look like his mother, that's for sure!   

Cats are amazing creatures and great companions.  Mine are family.  Nobody comes into my house or shop unless they pass the cat test.

What was rare , is that she only had the one

This was back when Broom was a kitten and didn't know how to come down from a tree after running up it. A few times she would spend the night in the tree, vocally expressing disagreement with the predicament she got herself into . 

At first I kept climbing the trees to carry her down to the ground. Generally, she would frisk up and attempt to get away from me climbing further up the tree when I would try to get a hold of her.

Then the idea came to me that if I shot a stream of water from a garden hose over her head, she would be motivated to figure out how to find a way down. That seemed to help only marginally. I think what finally taught her to descend from trees was watching our older cat, Mishka. He was a great mentor to her while growing up.

This is the picture of Broom right after I got her from the tree. She managed to descend a couple of branches, protesting loudly against the water treatment, but I still had to climb the tree to get her down. Not a happy cat at all.
