Hit 35,000 miles on my 2004 DL650.
Freaky reliable.
Have not looked at the valves.
My riding buddy is way over 55,000 miles.
He checked the valves twice and they did not have to be adjusted.
He says that he's not checking them anymore.
Valve interval is 14,5000 miles if you want to check.  Can't beat that.
Tires, chains, sprockets, plugs and air filters besides the routine oil changes.
Not even a bulb has burned out on the sucker.
This a great long distance bike.
Did a 6 day 3,200+ mile trip to Floriday 1 1/2 years ago and a run to James Bay road and back from NJ
last summer.  Bike just eats up the miles.  700-800 miles per day is nothing on this bike.
Winshield does make a difference.
MPG is 52-56 mpg on average.
Got 60 mpg the other day going to Schocharie to plead "insanity" on a speeding ticket.
If you stay under at 75 mph indicated or less and really push it you will get great mileage.
The moment you start going 90+ indicated the MPG take a dip.
If you play tag with 110+ indicated you are going into the 40's.
It's not me, it's this guy I know.  That same guy ran an indicated 90-115 for two hours
going from ValD'or to Montreal last year and got 46 mpg.

is it time to check the valves?

Whoot!  Thanks for the report!
The motorcycle is no longer the hobby, the skill has become the hobby.

Power does not compare to skill.  What good is power without the skill to use it?

good judgement trumps good skills every time.

Wild.

You have something in common with vantec6040 who quickly honed in on the 650 V-Twin but took the long way around (going for the SV650) before acquiring a DL650 a month ago.  He's been "lovin' every minute" of it.

Best to keep to near-legal on the major roads.  No sense having the smokies take notice you're having fun, or tempting fate.  :)

Nice to hear it's a reliable beast!   I crossed over to the Wee Side 4 weeks ago!

Once I get the windshield issue taken care of, I'll start looking for luggage and/or cases.    I hope to have this bike for a LONG time!
On those days when life is a little too much and nothing seems to be going right, I pause for a moment to ponder the wise last words of my grandfather:  "I wonder where the mother bear is?"
