around 190-200-210 mpg if your talking about the 5gal tank. is it bad for the bike/engine to keep running it until it needs to be put into reserve, or should i make a habit of filling up b4 it hits reserve?

PuddleJumper

I have an '04 factory stock.
I go to reserve at 204 to 206 miles on my interstate commute.

My 89 gets close to 250 miles before reserve, but I have an 04 tank.Alot less if I go for a day of fun rides.

Frankie have you shipped those parts to me yet?I leave for Kentucky monday morn and need to make sure some one is watching for them.
Thanks.

Running until you have to hit reserve will not damage the engine in anyway in a carb.  Problems can arise in fuel injection where the fuel pump can not do it's job dry, thus fuel injection model motorcycles do not have reserve but have low gas warning lights.  The bike was engineered to use a reserve switch.  Safety is a issue if you run out of gas on the interstate and slow down while traffic zooms by, and flipping it could be a hassle.  I just reset my mileage when gasing up and stop early for gas.  I carry a notepad on trips to write down total mileage figures too.  I know, I'm a Nerd.

good to know, i should still probablymake a habit of filling up before for the reasons you gave. although, i've gotten pretty good at knowing when to switch to reserve before it starts to starve.

So is that why my bike ran like crap this afternoon (with 215 miles on a tank) and ran like a champ after I filled her up? I looked in the tank and thought I had plenty of fuel, but I guess not!   :)
All we are is the sum of our experiences.

omg I thought I had only a 2 gallon tank, when I first got it it ran out of gas in my garage so i went and got a 2.5 gallon tank of gas n it filled the whole thing up so I am not what one lied but I usually just refuel it at 100 miles. it seams to be happy around 2 or 3 gallons in it anyways. Anybody have any facts or comments on this way to make me do otherwise please tell me.

BTW My MC's engine is all stock. That's one reason I get good mileage, plus I don't ride hard when I commute.

Add to this question: how many gallons can you put in your tank?

I have the old-style tank (1993).  If I fill up just after going on reserve, I can get 2.3 to 2.5 gal in there.  If it's "dry" -- i.e. gasping for breath on reserve, it's a bit less than 3.5.  Shouldn't those numbers be higher?  This isn't a starvation problem -- my reserve still works...

Is the air space on top of the tank really that big?  17L ~= 4.59 gal.

As far as mileage, I got 100-120 miles before going on reserve.  But that was with Dynojet needles and 145 jets, so it was running a bit rich ...   Haven't run through a full tank with the carbs re-done yet, but I'm up to 100 miles and it still is running.

The older GS 500E has a smaller tank than the GS 500F (plastic fairing).  What you say is perfectly normal.  My GS 500E gets about 120 miles with 2.5 gallons before hitting reserve.  The F model has a 5 gallon tank, most people report at or over 200 miles.

300 miles / 4.2 gallons = 71.42 mpg    yeah, i can get that if i stay around 30 mph or if you weigh 95 lbs
The most i ever got was 75 mpg in theory 75x4.2 = 315

Once i added k&n air filter, exhaust, jet the carb, timing, new cams
i get 40 mpg - but then i like to run 70 mph, ride twisties and its a whole different bike
about 50 mpg if i go slow
