Don't put galvanized steel (like most of your steel carb parts) in acid.  It eats away the galvanization, which allows it to rust.

A question for you metallugically oriented types:  In the electrolytical rust-removal method, is the black residue just black rust (FE3O4)?  If so, how do you remove it for the application of a sealant if, say, I wanted to do that to my gas tank?
