Best way to bump start?

So I was visiting a friend the other day, and I left the bike in the 'parking light' key position. After about 6 hours, the battery had drained so that the starter wouldn't turn the engine, even though the headlight had enough current to stay on.

I didn't need to bump start it cuz they had jumper cables and a car. However, next time I prolly won't be as fortunate. So, from you guys experience, what's the best way to bump start the gs?

alright try this ( if needed)

1. get on the bike facing down hill
2. start rolling with bike in neutral/ and with key on
3. clutch in shift to second,keeping clutch lever pressed, stand on pegs ( stand up)
4. at the same time pop clutch lever out AND slam your ass down on the seat ( helps to ejkep rear wheel from locking up) :thumb:

That's all good advice, the trick is to have a hill handy, or a M8 to push.

If not pushing at a trot and leaping takes a bit of nerve the first time you do it. If you do this wait until you are propperly on the bike before popping the clutch or you might just end up in a heap.

i've bump started her when the positive lead came unconnected somewhere under the tank, so in other words i had no battery. you can do it on a flat surface if you have two people, put it in 2nd gear, you or some1 else push as fast as you can, let the clutch out slowly until the bike starts and quickly bring in the clutch. an easy way to practice is to have the bike rolling slowly, kill the engine(place kill switch back to on!) put it in 2nd gear and try to start her.  :thumb:

Yeah, I've left my bike on kill battery before.

It's a little weird the first time you do it but put the bike in neutral with the ignition on and choke set appropriately and disengage the kill switch if you used it to park the bike.  Stand on the left of the bike holding the two handle bars and start pushing her down the street getting to a brisk pace.  Then jump on the seat, kick the shifter into first gear and she should fire up.  Make sure to pull the clutch in once it starts so that you don't stall and give it a rev or two and off you go!

Or at least thats how I do it...I'm sure there are all sorts of variations such as using second gear or keeping it in gear and holding the clutch in while you run with it, etc.  This is just what is most comfortable for me

Ha, I had to do this this morning. I just put the bike in 2nd gear and put the clutch in and ran with my ass on the bike. Then popped out the clutch and pulled back in real quick. Viola. Then the next problem was finding out why it wouldn't start. Come to find out the connector for the clutch switch had come out (had to have happened when I washed her last night  Doh!!!!).

I'd disable all of that nanny-crap.  The engine should start when 3 preconditions are fullfilled: (1) ignition is on, (2) killswitch is on, (3) starter button is pressed.  Anything else is just added complexity and begging for trouble.

I just run along side her with her in first and the clutch pulled then I jump and swing my leg over...get situated real quick and slowly let out till i feel the bike slow down a bit then drop it. Thats with all the other thing that need to be on, on. Had to do that for a week while I waited for my battery to come in...the moped battery i was using just didn't cut it some times.

I had to once. Left the key in the on postion at the gas station, I was about to take off then a friend stoped by and we started talking. Ten minutes later she wouldn't turn over. I just hopped on her and just duck walked her up to 3mph and popped the clutch in 1st gear and she started right up. By the way it's easy for me to duck walk the bike i'm 6' 4" .
07 GS - Jardine exhaust , lunch box , LP pegs , Race Tech CE (3 turns) + .85 fork springs + 15wt oil. 15 tooth sprocket , Sport demons , rejet 150/65/22.5/3 washers , heatshelding for fuel tank + lines and NGK iridium plugs.
