Drag pipes (open exhaust) VW exhaust tips

I am going to run an open exhaust on my gs. But to keep from having to jet the carbs so much. I came up with an idea. Dont laugh until youve read it all. Does anybody remember on the old VW bugs they had two chrome exaust tips that come out from under the rear valence. These where actually small mufflers. I thought after I cut the y out of the exhaust put one in each side. I just dont know th O.D. of the tips does anybody know what it is. Please tell me what you all think about this idea. I believe it will work.

you realize no matter what you will have to rejet? and if you dont then you will be running super lean?

Yea I realize that I will still have to rejet it. Im trying to solve 2 problems at once. Im thinking that this will lower the size of main jet I will have to run and if I do get pull over for loud exhaust they cant ticket me for no mufflers. I believe that it will run better set up like this than with no mufflers and larger jets.

Re: Ticketing you for no mufflers.. they don't have to get you for no muffler. More and more states are making ANY modification to the muffler illegal, so even if you have one, if it's not stock, they can still write you a ticket, they won't be stopped by a minor thing like a VW exhaust.

With the naysaying out of the way, I guess it's a neat idea, if you try, give us pics, and definitely let us know how the jetting goes.

I will have to post photos of the new 08 GSXR1000 @ work I duno who the after market system on it is made by but.. it sounds BAD ASS! and looks AWESOME! Just two small flared pipes stickin out the side  Sooo sweet.


** a side note... I took it for a ride today and my 1st comment to a customer who asked to listen to it run was... "At idle... It sounds like one mean ass VW  It soooo does.. Such a mean sound to it. I will post pics of the exhaust tomorrow from work.

Ok, but I was pointing out that those don't work like what he posted. The VW tips have a muffler inside them. The gixxer has a separate muffler.

You can get universal 'muffled' resonator tips too.  They're just little glasspacks, and don't really do much except maybe dull down the raspyness.

The VW tips aren't really mufflers.  They have a very small layer of fiberglass and then perforated metal holding the fiberglass in.  They really don't cut out any noise. 

I took had them off my bug once and cranked the car.  The only difference was that it didn't have that high pitched whistle all bugs make.
