hey guys. I've already searched, and I came up with nothign on THIS issue...

I've always had trouble tightening my chain without it making noise. I tends to rub someplace and give a vvvvVVVVVvmmmmvvvvvVVVVVVVvmmmmm sound, like the wheel is not straight or something. but it IS straight. Now, I CAN get the thing to stop, if I'm super careful, etc.

My question is.. when I get the bike up on center and in neutral, then spin the tire with my hand, there is a point where it gets very tight and will stop spinning. then I have to spin it HARDER to get it past that point. I was looking at the chain tension in in both tight and loose  positions and noticed:
1. when the wheel is tight, the lower half of the chain is extremely tight.
2. when the wheel is free, the lower half is looser.

I also notice when I start it and put it in first, both top and bottom of the chain sort of flit up and down, like they are receiving different amounts of drive.

now, this is with no adjusting. only putting it up on center and spinning.

Any ideas? I was thinking it might be possible to have like an extra link or something?

Sounds like you have several siezed links...............its time for a new chain.

Yep, replace the chain. The varying chain tension is due to stretching. They do not stretch evenly.
Common sense in not very common.

Anyone know a place betweeon south SF and mtn view that would have a replacement? how much are we talkin?

Or, check RWC Honda; approx. $60-80

MotoJava.com is in SF

What about Alan on Barf?  At Sprotbile Dynamics.

And, if you get the chain tonight, I'll help you put it on and get it aligned tomorrow before the ride (of course, I know you can do it yourself  :thumb: ).

It's a little further south than Mountain View, but Santa Clara Cycles in Sunnyvale probably carries chains.

Jazerr - How are your sprockets?

I just called SCCA, and they have a Bikemaster 520 o-ring for $65, and a D.I.D. for $89, but we're not sure if the D.I.D. is a rivet or clip-type master, yet.  He'll call me back.

p.s. I'm running the Bikemaster

If you don't mind using a clip style masterlink, instead of a rivet, you can get a 110 520 chain + sprockets for about $90ish (IIRC) shipped from ebay.

Hang out there, we may flame, but we don't hate.

My attitude is in serious need of readjustment, and I'm ok with that.

So, that scratch fellow....that is one cool cat.
