Gas flowing freely from float bowls

Well, I put my new (used) tank on yesterday, and figured I'd do a carb cleaning too (Since my old tank was rusted to hell, I figured the carbs would be filthy).. They were pretty dirty. I pulled em, cleaned em, put em back together (with stainless steel allen heads instead of those crappy soft stock screws). Put em back on, and now they piss gas. I don't think it's a float height issue, as I had no issues before. I pulled em and poured a little gas in, and it just pours out of where the float bowls meet the main body. This to me screams that the gaskets are just old, and too compressed to seal anymore. They're the originals from '02, and I've had the carbs apart 3 or 4 times. I leave wednesday for NC, for work, and I'm taking the bike (Since I don't own a car). I obviously won't be able to get the gaskets in time, so my solution is to RTV them, temporarily, until I get back from NC and can replace them with stock gaskets (Since I'll be rejetting soon anyway). My question is, is this a viable option? As long as I'm careful with the placement so that none breaks off and gets sucked into the jets, I don't see an issue. It's not a high temp area, there's no passages through the joint that I have to worry about blocking.

Input?

Hang out there, we may flame, but we don't hate.

My attitude is in serious need of readjustment, and I'm ok with that.

It would be a serious pain in the arse to RTV that and not plug passages, plus RTV and such eventually get broken down by gas.

TO me it sounds weird that the gas gushes out, sounds as if though something is blocking it from seating all the way

It's weird, as soon as I tip the carbs at all, gas flows from where the bowls mate to the body. As for not blocking passages, I don't think it'll be that bad? There's a large mating surface, plenty of lip, and there's no passages through the mating surfaces, so it shouldn't be that bad. I checked for obstructions, and I really think it's just that the gaskets are so old and so compressed that they don't seal at all. I know RTV will eventually be eaten by gas, but this is just for the 2.5 weeks that I'll be gone, I'm doing a rejet/lunchbox/slipon eventually, so then I'll use the real gaskets.

Seems weird to me that they shrunk suddenly between taking the bowls off and then putting them back on, did you spray them with some sort of cleaner of something?

OK, not that you dont know what you are doing but.. are the bowls on the right carbs? They will fit the wrong way  :icon_mrgreen: can you get to your drain screws or are they on the inside?  :dunno_white: if they are on the inside then they are WRONG  :icon_mrgreen:

Lol, thanks for the input, but I made sure to only do one carb at a time, to avoid such issues.

I had a Suzuki Mech work on my GS once and he put them on in reverse.. they fit and hold fuel but the floats stick cause they cant close  :thumb:
