Tire leak

I ran over a screw on my last ride (or at least that's where i noticed it). I didn't realize it until I felt the wobble in the rear tire. That's when I noticed the tire was flat. i was close enough to a gas station that i was able to roll in, fill it up, and run home. Using a standard tire repair kit (the plug kind), I fixed the hole.

The patch itself passes a leak test (no soap bubbles), but now I find that the bead leaks right below where i patched the hole. I'm guessing that I unseated the bead when I ran the tire flat. I can't figure out how to reseat the bead. I've tried a couple of things, including direct pressure, inflating to a few PSi and rolling the bike over the leaking area, and putting circumferential pressure on the tire (as suggested on another page).

Any suggestions as to how to get the bead to seal? i hate to take it to a dealer to get it done if it's an easy fix. Also, is it posssible that i tore the bead somehow? How would you test this if that is what happened?

well, what I did when I got a flat (it was more a sudden blow out) was I did exactly what you did, which was patch it... but I too had a small leaking problem (not from the bead)


I took it down to an INDEPENDENT mechanic ( i.e. Not a Stealership) and had them patch it (25 bucks)  They pulled the tire, put in a permanent plug and remounted my tire.  Worked like a champ for another 1k miles before I had to replace my tire.

Did you have to replace the tire because of the hole or was it because of something else (normal wear, etc.)?
