Any tips on removing the lock assembly from its home in the tail plastic and reinstalling it?

Hang out there, we may flame, but we don't hate.

My attitude is in serious need of readjustment, and I'm ok with that.

The chord will come out as well. There is a little ball on the ends that rotate and pop out.

You could gut the core of the tumblers. Not really sure what you need or why.
Common sense in not very common.

the lock is useful in securing your factory toolkit, registration, or when you lock your helmet under your seat. At least its worth it to me.

btw parts are more expensive here in LA for some reason.

you can always remove the lock ( dunno why tho) and tuck the cable out of sight, and just pull on it when needed, and climbinb rope, sheez, you gotta use logging chain

Finished replacing the tail plastics... only took me over an hour  :icon_razz:

It's not as easy as it seems.

On my 04 model (different from the lock in the Clymer)

The clip comes out with minor effort. My problem was the wire wouldn't pop out of its holder. I forced it, eventually it came out at some random time. Then to take the lock assembly out, you have to remove the other end of the wire by unscrewing the seat release plate that mounts it. Then the lock comes out with the wire, through the hole.

So, in review,

1. pull out the squarish clip behind the lock. One end of it is bent so you can grip it
2. pop the wire free from the metal plate that holds it to the lock
3. undo the other end of the wire by unscrewing the plate that holds it down
4. pull the whole thing out through the hole in the fairing.

reverse to install.

If you are reinstalling all of your tail plastics, it will save time to assemble the 3 tail fairings and bottom connecting piece before reattaching the seat lock wire to the bike. Otherwise you won't have enough slack to fit the whole thing over your taillight.

Other'n that, damn! It looks f%$king handsome! What a nice rear end. No ugly decals either... pure yellow.
