Adam's Accident

My best mates and I have bikes. Myself (gs), Chad(ninja250), and Adam(cbr600). Of course, Adam is the badass of the bunch with a completely blacked out 2007 CBR600.

The phone yesterday around 6pm:

*ring*

Me: "UFC Buddha Loves You. Be there in 15minutes"
Chad: "WE'RE ON THE CORNER OF DENNY AND 5TH! ADAMS DOWN!"
Me: "There in 5."

*click*

The Accident: Adam was traveling Westbound on Denny. A main street through midtown Seattle. A car in the oncoming lane took A SUDDEN ILLEGAL LEFT right as Adam was passing through an intersection. Adam didn't lock up the back, but he hit the front brakes hard. He endo'd and hit the passenger side rear quarter panel of the car. near the trunk. The exact details of what Adam's body and bike made contact with are fuzzy. Chad was a block behind Adam. All Chad saw was Adams bike "fly in the air". By the time he got to Adam there was already crowed around him and a pool of blood beneath him. Luckily there was already an ambulance traveling the same block.

The injuries:
Left wrist snapped. Had pins put in today.
Small kidney tear. Stopped bleeding.
Left big toe dislocated. Popped back.
Bone deep lactation on right elbow. 28 stitches.
Left arm. Severe road rash and glass from hitting the window.

The pictures: My friend Stephen is a local photographer. An artsy one at that. Note the dramatic tone of these picture he took of Adam in the hospital today.

For the record: He was wearing his Helmet, t-shirt, jeans, Addidas, and gloves.

More pictures: These are pictures I took of his bike today. I rode it home from the scene although I probably shouldn't have given it's condition. It's rolled straight. No right foot peg. No front brake. No mirrors. Entire front and side farrings hanging off. Cowling holding on by the lock. No fluids leaking. Engine sounded fine. Haven t fully inspected the bike but I'm sure the frame and maybe subframe are bent. We'll see tomorrow.

Glad your buddy is alive and getting patched up. the pictures are amazing.

I didn't even know endoing was a danger. That left hand turn by cars though is the top threat, I always bug out when they start with that getting-ready shaZam! on my approach.

a jacket would have saved his skin but probably not his wrist. OTOH, elbow protection gives you options in landing.

Hope he recovers well.

Ughhhh.......bastard cages!!!
Aside from the laceration and glass injuries, it sounds like his injuries were similar to mine......
Shattered CMC left hand, had pins, went insane
dislocated toes, last time I ride in shoes
few small patches of road rash outside of the armored areas.
Dislocated shoulder that popped back into place when I stood up after skidding along the ground.
I'm told I flipped 3 times before I hit the ground and my bike just laid over  on it's side and skidded......

Hope he heals up well,  those damn pins get to itching like all hell in about a week.  Of course, until then they just hurt like all hell

Well your friend is seriously lucky given it doesn't look, to me anyway, like he was wearing much protective gear. Hope he heals up well and hope the CBR is salvageable so he can keep riding.

Good luck and ride safe.

Cheers,

Forgot to mention something even more painful...the driver had NO INSURANCE.

Kasumi

It shouldn't matter though because it was an illegal turn and the police were involved (i presume here with such a serious incident that EMS attended) the driver will be forced to pay for damages themselves as they were in the wrong and caught by the police basically.

Good that they have the person accountable, but getting the money is another thing. thats why they have uninsured/underinsured coverage.

that persons debt is going to be staggering, like as much as a college education. Not that they arent culpable, but dang... it can cost you hundreds of dollars just to get something focking looked at nowadays.

we need affordable health care...

He survived...somebody was looking out for him.  Hope he heals well, and feels better.

if hes a very good friend of yours, then you should go to new enough close out store an buy him a jacket with some padding in it :)  i did the same for a buddy of mine, he refused to pony up any cash for gear, so i bought him a cheap mesh joe rocket jacket.  he wears it all the time now, lol.

GEAR!!!  GEAR!!! GEAR!!!!!!
jordanearl, good idea!
the only reason I came out of my wreck as lightly as I did is my gear.
My helmet is visibly fractured in 2 places and the armor on one elbow of my old jacket is worn almost completely through along with the back protector.
In the ER, my PA was a fellow rider and told me that without the jacket I would have been getting skin grafts, and if I had been wearing a 3/4 helmet I would have shattered my jaw....................

So, yeah, make him buy at least a jacket......................... would have saved him a lot of pain..............not much can be done about the wrist injuries generally.........not without seriously restricting movement.

Your friend is one lucky guy. A guy out here (Colorado) got killed in that exact same scenario (left hand turning car) on Sunday.

Hope your friends doing ok. Tell him to hug a loved one.

WESTMINSTER – The motorcyclist who was killed after being hit by a large sports utility vehicle Sunday evening was the son of former Denver Broncos player Vance Johnson.

Westminster Police say 19-year-old Vaughn Edward Johnson was riding a blue and white Suzuki motorcycle when he was hit by a green Chevrolet Suburban Sunday just before 8 p.m. as he was driving southbound on Sheridan Boulevard.

Twenty-six-year-old Melissa Mondragon driving the Suburban made a left turn from Sheridan Boulevard onto 100th Avenue directly in the path of the motorcycle, according to police. She was not injured in the crash.

Johnson was taken to St. Anthony Central Hospital where he died from his injuries.

The accident is still under investigation and officials say Johnson was wearing a helmet.

Vance Johnson played for the Broncos from 1985 to 1995.

GEAR!!!  GEAR!!! GEAR!!!!!!

Like a lot of people who crash without a riding jacket..he has one but wasn't wearing it. I'd like to scold him but I'm just as guilty as he is. When it's nice out and I just wanna ride around town I'll throw on a jeans, tennis shoes, thermal shirt, t-shirt, roll up the sleeves, and I'm good. So yeah...It's took an incident like this to change my ways. I'll wear my jacket from now on

....or at least I'm saying that NOW. :icon_confused:

Yeah. Mandatory. I'll keep you guys updated on how this goes. I'll be interesting to document the process and time frame.

ps: Under that gauze?...his arm looks like hamburger. His ink is shredded.

jordanearl

yeah it is hard to scold someone when they are still layin in a hospital bed 8)  an im guilty of goin out without my jacket more times then id like to admit.  we should all try an get in the practice of never goin out unprotected.

I ride with ATLEAST Helmet, jacket, gloves and boots all the time and 90% of the time i wear motorcycle trousers too either leathers or over pants regardless of the weather (when im not wearing motorcycle trousers im wearing thick jeans)! Safety is key!

Theres only one incident where ive not ridden in full gear or near full gear and that was during a bike rally that comes past our village - Banbury run vintage bike meet and they have to go up a famous steep hill where i live called sunrising hill and everyone gathers on the hill to help push the bikes up and cheer them on. It takes part in the height of summer and it was so hot one year that me and dad went down in bare minimum to the hill so just a helmet and we were wearing shorts and t-shirts and trainers.  I tell you i felt so exposed that i cant believe how people in the US can ride like that all the time even in the heat.

Update: Adam checked out of Harborview yesterday. He's very sore to say the least but he's in good spirits. He knows it'll be a while but he's eager to ride again.  :thumb:

...and the Doc gave him plenty of great meds to share...er...I mean to help with his pain. Did I say share? I meant help with his pain.

tonight he was talkin about making his cbr into a "stunt bike". oh vey.

Ive never understood the whole Vicodin/hydrocodone thing. If I'm in pain Id rather have an advil, and its no good for fun it makes me feel all hot and scratchy.  :icon_confused:

Wow!  :o
Glad he's in as good of shape as he is.
Great pics too.

Hope he heals quickly and without any ill side effects.
