Hot Damn! V&H is loud

I just put a V&H pipe on with a K&N pod filters and 150 mains.  Wow, I wasn't expecting that big a rumble.  Neither were my roomates, but oh well.  I couldn't help but smile though.

For those that have done this, have you noticed any backfiring on deceleration?  I noticed some, and then it seemed to subside a bit.  Still haven't been out for an extended test ride yet.

I've read here that a slight popping on decel is common and nothing to worry about.

It's a lean condition due to the vacuum induced by the engine running at high rpm with closed throttle. Nothing to be concerned unless it's doing it a lot. You can open the pilot fuel screws a little reduce it.

Oh, and, yes, the V&H is obnoxiously loud. Just ask my neighbor  :oops:

My deceleration popping is no worse than that.  It may even be less, I'm not sure.  The bike roars quite a bit more in real life though.  I also have individual K&N pod filters (the round straight type, RU-800) that add to the cacophony of sound.

If I recall, my full system was only $210, and that'f from a dealer!  But then there was a $100 dollar installation charge :x   At the time I wasn't able to do the install myself, really, I didn't even have the opportunity.

Question: Would switching to an after market air-filter (say K&N) decrease the amount of backfire during acceleration? Would the absence of that lil restrictor-ring do anything?

Stick a long screwdriver down the tube and see if you have any baffle. I don't think there is any at all.

I've had the V&H + K&N setup for 18,000 miles now, and it pops after decelerating from higher rpm's. There hasn't been a change so long as the header pipes  are kept snug. You'll notice alot more popping if one/both come loose, or if the rubber boot between the carbs and the intake is loose.

If you don't rev it like mad you can still get decent gas milage. Your neighbors won't mind it so much either.

An aftermarket air filter will lean it out more ='s more popping!


Mine pops a little on shark de acceleration. I find if you keep the throttle open just a wee little, you can eliminate 90% of it.  :thumb:

Note:

It is normal for many high performance exhaust systems to moderately backfire or pop when the throttle is closed from mid-to-high rpm. In fact, one should expect a well-tuned high performance engine to "pop" and "crackle" when the throttle is closed at high rpm.

The popping is a result of the air/fuel mixture becoming very lean when the throttle is closed and the engine is rotating well above idle speed. It is also necessary that the exhaust system have rather open mufflers.

Why This (normally) Happens:

1)     When the throttle valve is in the idle position, fuel does not flow out of the main system (needle, needle jet, main jet). Fuel is only delivered to the engine by the pilot (idle) system.
2)    The combined effect of the closed throttle and elevated engine rpm is to create a fairly strong vacuum in the intake manifold. This vacuum, in turn, causes a high air flow rate through the small gap formed by the throttle valve and carburetor throat.
3)    Under these conditions the pilot (idle) system cannot deliver enough fuel to create a normal, combustible air/fuel ratio. The mixture becomes too lean to burn reliably in the combustion chamber. It gets sent into the exhaust system unburned and collects there.
4)    When the odd firing of the lean mixture does occur, it is sent, still burning, into the exhaust system where it sometimes ignites the raw mixture that has collected ---- the exhaust then pops or backfires.
5)    Completely stock Harleys do not do this until open-end mufflers, such as the popular Screamin' Eagle slip-ons, are installed. The exhaust must be both free-flowing and have an open exit for the popping to occur.


Other possible causes:

Air Leaks:

Any source of fresh air into the exhaust system can create or worsen the conditions that bring about exhaust backfiring. The most common entry point is the junction of the header pipes and mufflers. Even a small air leak can dramatically increase the intensity or likelihood of exhaust system backfiring.

A high temperature silicone sealant, as can be found in many auto parts stores, may be used to seal the pipe/muffler junction.

Lean Carburetion:

While exhaust system popping may be considered normal, it is certainly made worse by an overly lean idle circuit.

Be sure that your carburetor's pilot jet is the correct size and that the idle air mixture screw is correctly adjusted before looking for other causes of popping. The procedure for adjusting the pilot circuit is covered in the Tuning Manual.

Ignition:

If exhaust system popping  is very loud, irregular and accompanied by loss of power, then you should suspect that the ignition system is not performing as it should. If, for some reason, the ignition sometimes fires at the wrong time, then exhaust popping can become very energetic (loud). Look for failing high tension leads (plug wires), failing ignition coil(s) and especially switches or connectors as possible causes.

try calling some motorcycle wreakers in your area.... i picked mine up for 80 bucks..... it was off of a 1989.. the muffler is dented and sounds like a maraca, the header is is dented :dunno_white: and my wallet is not so dented....  just dont be stupid like me and think that a whire wheele is a good idea............... i used 2.. rust is in style right?..... u are also gonna need longer header bolts..... and kick your centre stand good bye..... gotta take the mufler and mid pipe off to put my centra stand on so i can clean my chain....... and my headers off so i can do an oil change........ that means my Faring has gotta come off......... but the Sound..... is it worth it????   when u hear it u will know :cheers:

gotta love the V n H    turned my quiet little put put into a screaming banchie....   i love messing with ppl talking on cell phones....... ya u roll that window uo....... downshift time....... hahahahah.....

lots of backfireing on decelration from high rpm's   but no flames...
when i miss my powershift and hit nutral...... just sparks  :icon_rolleyes:

I got my Yoshi for 75 bucks!  The dude brought his bike in to be serviced and was going back stock so I bought his for the cost of his stocker from Ebay.  Mine pops too... not a biggie
