6000-7000rpm hesitation

Hi, all!

Recently, a friend of mine took my GS for a ride and he low-sided it... I had to remove the aftermarket exhaust as it got a hole and re-install the stock one. The jets and everything about carbs is still stock (nothing has been changed for the aftermarket exhaust).

Now I'm experiencing wierd power loss or hesitation at ~6000 RPM - the bike always has trouble getting over 6000 RPM and in lower gears, I can actually feel it slowing down (bogging down) for a moment.

Before I could easilly go from 4000 RPM to full speed (~180km/h = ~110 mph) in 6th gear. Now, it just won't go over 160 km/h (~ 100 mpg) and even that takes a long long time. If I shift to 5th I can get a little over 160 km/h but it falls back in 6th.

What could that be? Is it possible that something has moved in the carbs and changed the setup due to the crash? Could that just be a dirty air filter or bad spark plugs?

Thanks, D.

Sounds like my bike before...

I have a v&h full system.. and it DIDNT have any jets or anything. It wouldnt rev out like it should. I believe it was a combo of things. The carbs were the main culprit. REPLACE EVERY GASKET. I know this from bad experience :x . EVERY o ring.. etc... replace them now.

Then, 127.5 mains should work. or bigger. One or two washers on the needles.. and 40 pilots. Turn the mixture screws (youll have to remove the plugs first) out to about 2.5 or 3 and play with them. AND sync the carbs (i still have to do this myself).

If that doesnt work.. take out your airfilter and go for a ride. If it runs way better, than your filter is clogged like mine was, and you need either a drop in or clamp on k&n deal and bigger jets.

ANy more questions.. just ask. :thumb:

Oh yeah, if that all fails, and the carbs are jetted right... plug one of the holes in each slide.

If the bike is all stock meaning the jetting and the airbox and filter and pipe but it has acquired the problem suddenly I'd bet some of the gas from the floats has wetted the air filter and has caused it to choke up and not flow till the vacuum builds up more. So take it out and clean it. If its paper and you want to change to UNI or similar one I would like your old paper filter no matter how dirty it is.
If that dont fix your problem the carbs may beed to be cleaned. The funny thing is at 6K you are just enetering the main jet region and the needle is nearly in control of the whole thing. So the whole theory of running bad after droppping it is going to not pan out in your case. But if there was dirt in the bottom of the carbs, when the bike falls over that dirt flies around in the float and will be likely to block up one one the holes in the carb and cause it to get less gas or air or whatever. However that is more apparent at low throttle openings. main jets are too big to be affected by dirt...of course I am assuming you dont have nice big chunks of sand in there...physically impossible cos it wont make it past the filter screen in the tank etc.
Cool.
