Hi,

I'm new around here so please be gentle with me.

Been riding a GS500 1998 for 2 months now after deciding to get one as a winter commuter and keep the big bike all snuggly and warm in the garage. I will be need ing advice as time goes on I'm sure, as the big bike is going away the end of the month so the little GS will be my main transport.

Just thought I would say HI.

Welcome oobyscoot.

You'll likely want to replace your fuel lines now, and possibly your petcock. Then get on with the scheduled maintenance. The gs will serve you well in the cool/cold weather just as the warm. Let the choke do it's job, keep the tank full (wild temperature swings mean water) and don't forget to ride easy till the tires are warm.

I commute on mine in Florida's mild winters, and the only issues so far are occasional fit of bad gas and a broken wire.

:)

Oh, mine's also a 98 model, 18,400 or so miles. How's yours ?

Thanks for the welcomes,

I think the winers here in bitterly cold England may be a little colder than those of Florida, but I think the bike will serve me OK.

When I got her she had an oil leak from the rocker cover gasket, I had to get the tank off to do this and noticed that the fuel lines had been replaced recently, she had new plugs and oil filter and oil. P/O said he could not get a rocker cover gasket when he took it off to the the valve clearences and it had weaped a little ever since. A tube of instant gasket did the trick.

Could do with a new chain soonish, but it will do for this winter. She starts first go every time, not superbly quick, but keeps up with the cars on my route to work and back. she has done 24000 miles, looks a little tatty round the edges, but only cosmetic. Not a mint condition bike but for 300 quid with 12 months tax and test, I aint complaining.
