Yes my 1995 GS500E/S is incontinent
cant find a second hand tank that doesn't look like it will go the same way in a few weeks.
So question,
can you fit the later tank 2000 onwards tank to an earlier bike, would this need a matching seat and side panels.

This should probably be moved to the General section but, you might consider a lining kit of POR15 or the other brands. Done properly, the POR15 tank is better than original.

Some have retrofitted the later model tank on the older frame, but the seat and body plastics are different.

There is no GS Wiki mention of the conversion process, but I remember a few threads about this. Dgyver and Srinath have much knowledge about what would need to be done. Perhaps one will see this...if it gets moved by a mod (one of which I plan to send a PM to about it).

Hi Starwalt thanks for your reply
I have now re-posted this in General don't know why I didn't in the first place !

No problem, glad to help. There are pictures of my POR15 work on one of my tanks at my Bellsouth page. CLICK HERE and go to the Photo Albums link.

There is also a large section about lining in the GS Wiki. CLICK HERE for that page.

Thanks Starwalt your webpage is extremely useful

I have managed to get most of the info needed for a later tank swap from searching old posts
Two questions remain if I can find a tank on ebay/breaker

Can I use my old rear mounting bracket and tank petrol tap fitting or would I need to find a later tank with these bits included

Incidentally your tank was in a worse condition then mine buy only just !
also I see your tank was still leaking after the POR treatment did you manage to fix it by applying more POR.

Thanks for your help

In regards to the tank mount, my Suzuki OEM manual lumps 98, 99, 00 all in the same section so that also supports what the GS Wiki pages says HERE.
In short, you should be good with a 2000 tank for mounting and be able to reuse the pickup. The big change came in 2001 for US models.

It is not leaking with pressurized air. The leak is really my fault. I should have used a sealant on the outside of the tank - other than the black electrical tape. The POR15 was not at fault. I have another 90 GS, exact color scheme BTW, that I plan to coat also. It does not leak so it should be an easy process.

Correspondence to the POR15 people indicated that I would need to sand/rough-up the area concerned so that the material would adhere. Quite honestly they were surprised that it did seep/leak. Again, the next time I tackle such a bad tank, after the scouring with acids, I will seal it up tight before applying the lining liquid.

PS, you might look over your brackets when using a quote. I think you posted inside the quoted area. Place your comments beyond the last "
" bracket and it will look like this post.  ;)

Yes sorry I snipped the end "
" by mistake and then re-typed it without the "/"
HTML is almost as much of PITA as a leaking gas tank.
Thanks again for your help
