Well after 2 months of ownership and being ridden every day, I had my first issue with the goose last night.

When leaving work, she wouldn't start.

I hit the start button and clunk, nothing else, just clunk. I put a spanner accross the starter solenoid and she went first time. Local bike shop did not have the correct solenoid in stock so I went home and set about rebuilding the origional.

turns out to be just bad contacts, so I cleaned them up and away she went. But I have to say, they are a bugger to take appart. Took me about 3 hours in total for something that would have been a 10 minute job had the correct part been in stock.

ohgood

Don't forget about all those connections on the low amperage side. You know, clutch, sidestand,  neutral, etc. They like a little cleaning now and again.

If' you're not afraid of a little wiring, put a relay on it to interrupt the headlight while the starter is enganged. Makes starting on cold mornings much easier. :)

you could just manualy disconnect the headlight  8)  no need to rewire anything :)
I am not arguing or questioning you :) I'm just bored at work and throwing the ideas :)

no, no. That's not what I meant... I meant to START the bike with headlight disconnected :) (during cold days bike starts easier without headlight)
After you start it and warm it up you connect the headlight again :)

PS. I don't care it's illegal to ride without front headlight - but I think it would be insane  ;)

+1.
I am so happy I do not have an automatic light switch-on device like newer vehicles, I always switch my headlight on when engine has been started.
Yes, a solution could be a relay connected to the start ckt, to cut off the headlight when the starter motor is on, like in cars, where all main on-board devices (rear defroster, heater fan, windscreen wipers,...) are disconnected as long as the engine is being started. :thumb:

I got the impression that my headlight shut off when its starting  :dunno_white:. maybe it just dims from the lack of power?

Who told you that?? There's no such thing as a daytime MOT! All vehicles driven on public roads in the UK must be fitted with headlight(s) (Construction & Use Regulations state how many and where they can be positioned). It's illegal to drive any vehicle on UK roads without a working headlight, even during the day.

Indicators are optional depending on the age of the bike, but if fitted they must work. I believe mirrors are still optional.

There IS such a thing as a daytime MOT for bikes in the UK. Its intended for trials/enduro bikes etc that travel on the pubilic road while competing in events. You need a working brake light, rear reflector, speedo and a horn and thats all. If you are caught using it after the official lighting up time for your area  it becomes invalid and you are likely to be prosecuted. An MOT station will probably not grant a daytime MOT on a bike like a GS500, and a daytime MOT cert clearly states "Daytime use only" on it

There is plenty of info on the subject on the web if you search for it.
